I use mine cart elevators, which are mine carts on top of ladders, each 4 blocks above the previous.
It's pretty quick and easy if you have the iron to spare.

With a bit of clever neither portal placement you could setup a portal at ground level, step into the neither, a few steps, step out and be at the top of the platform, the only delay is the actual time it takes to travel through each portal.

I agree with BloodyPhoenix. Minecarts are the fastest way. Ender pearls cause too much damage. You have to wait for the Nether Portal to transport you to and from the Nether. And the ladder, of course you know. Using minecarts you can get to the top of the map in seconds. When you use each cart you instantly exit the one you're in and enter the one you're looking at. Its very easy, create your portal in the over world, write down the x,z cords of the two blocks on the ground, enter the neither, check your cords again, for a perfect link the two cords in the neither should be your over world cords divide by 3, so suppose your cords were (279, 431) in the neither it should be ( 90, 144). Ensure that its very very close to a perfect link. With that done your half way done.

Because cords are divided by 3, we have to move at least 3 spaces (preferably more, about 6 in the over world, along either the x or z direction. This is where you will place your second portal, but this time build it where your platform is, bearing in mind that it has to be at least 3 spaces away from your previous portal along either the x or z axis, you probably want about 6 to 9 spaces away from the previous portal. When your finished building it (remember to write down the x,z cords) enter it, you will most likely enter the neither at your first portal. All you have to do is build a second portal matching the x,z cords of the second portal you made in the over world, which will just be a few steps away from your first one. if you done your math right, they should link up.

I hope i explained this well enough so as not to be confusing.

One other thing I should note, is that the Y cord is more or less ignored, its only ever used if there is 2 portals found at the exact same location, and even then it doesn't always get used, I believe its more or less a 50 50 thing.

Also sometimes you need to do a bit of work to get your portals to link in the neither because of lava lakes, and or ya will have to do some digging, ect.

thats is what i doing, but I made 3 block deep, just to be sure. You just need to make in the right place, just to not faal in the ground!

The fastest thing i have found is a zipper piston elevator, once you have a slime spawn then the rest of the stuff is easy to get.

And water onlu had to be two blocks deep and you can fall from any hight and be fine.

If hes playing MP, chances are it will break, elevators are notorious for breaking, also a minecart elevator is faster then a zipper elevator. A ender pearl elevator is probably the fastest means of climbing, but being that hes going so high ( about 180 blocks) is about 6 ender pearls, he would need to ensure that he was wearing feather falling boots. I haven't tested yet to see if dispensers will fire potions, if so he could trigger a dispenser to heal the player at each landing zone, but as i said i don't think our dispensers are at that level yet.

His best bet is a minecart or boat elevator, or the use of a neither portal.
