Just to kick up a little MC-related conversation: what are your favorite ways of getting XP?
My favorite method of gettign XP is to mine diamond ore, redstone ore, coal ore and lapis ore with a Silk Touch enchanted pickaxe and store them in a chest until I need a lot of XP quick. Then I take them out, line them up and mine them for XP (especially in with Fortune III enchanted pickaxe). I doubt this is the most efficient way of obtaining a lot of XP, as it is a bit labor-intensive with the whole lining up the ore and mining them, but this method works for me and it's kind fo fun, I think. It is a late game strategy, for sure, when I have enough mined materials for my basic needs. Early on in a game, I'll just mine all the coal ore and smelt all the iron ore I can find, as well as cooking food and breeding/killing animals.
I also like fishing and cooking the fish. Definitely not the easiest way to get a lot of XP, but useful when I just need enough to get to me to the next level. Nice chance of pace from my usually Survival mode grind and to past a rainy day.
I know a lot of people like mob farms but I never have been able to get into those. There have been a few Survival worlds where I made half-ass mob farms by finding a dungeon and keeping a torch on the mob spawner until I needed to kill some. (More often than not I simply destroy the mob spawner for the XP.) But that requires me going down in to a mine whereas my above methods I can do around my homebase. My other half-ass "mob farm" is any desert biome. I just hang out there until sundown and then all the monsters come to me. But mostly I reserve kiling hostile mobs for their loot rather than XP.
(And if you're tempted to gripe about my typo in the title, pls, get a hobby.)
I just turn the gamma to 100, equip myself with a set of iron armor, sword & bow - all w/ low level enchants and then head to a desert biome at night. Then I just kill everything -- animals, monsters, everything. After 2-3 nights of doing this, I usually have enough for a level 30 enchant. I also end up w/ a ridiculous amount of loot. This is also bar none the fastest way to get significant quantities of gunpowder.
The bow is important for the creepers. You can kill them with a sword, but it's trickier and if you are fighting more than just the creeper it can quickly turn deadly.
I have an obsidian house out in a corner of the map I have absolutely no interest in building on. It is stocked with swords and food. When I need XP, I spend a few nights out there killing anything that peeks its head out. There is a cavern nearby that I duck into during daylight to continue the rampage. (the house is obsidian in the event a creeper gets froggy and sneaks up on me from behind. Keeps me from building a house over and over.
Enderman farm. It was the first mob farm I built on my current map (and it would be my only mob farm if I didn't need as much bonemeal as I do). I built my enderman farm a little smaller then most, only 9 blocks long instead of the 16 most people suggest. With it, I get to level 30 in less then 2 minutes. Everytime I visit the end, I enchant an entuire inventory worth of equipment before leaving. That way I don't have to travel there often.
Also, caving, exploring and building with unlimited ender pearls is a game changer.
I have 3 surface zombie dungeons within 5 blocks of eachother. The loot sucks, but its a quick way to level. But my favorite way is to go in a desert and just fight, just like SixSid said.
My favorite way of getting XP is going hunting at night. If you play survival on flatworlds at night and go hunting with good armor (which you get by trading with villagers or gold from the zombie pigmen) and killing all the zombies. You get loads!
I also like a lot mining redstone and lapis lazuli..
I used to be in the school of thought of "Never use a monster grinder for XP" until Anvils and Enchanted Books came along, and now it's a necessity for me. Granted, I'll always personally feel more accomplished by getting a nice level 30 enchant through good ol' monster hunting and mining, but my demands for enchants and repairs is simply too high to not rely on grinders anymore.
To that extent, I've discovered that there's a zombie spawner underneath the village I've been upgrading and expanding that's near (but not on) the surface and makes for really convenient grinding. The extra iron is a nice perk, too.
I've also discovered how much XP you get while fishing. Not enough to make you want to sit there and fish for XP as opposed to spawn trap grinders, but it's still an excellent bonus if you're getting fish to trade for emeralds with villagers, for example.
I made an underground tunnel for a castle one time and it was a long bunch of hallways that were about three by four and I swear at every turn I would see three to five more creatures.
