A lot of what I see on this forum is impatient people asking what will be in the next update immediately after one comes out and people asking for, if not demanding infinite worlds. I don't understand why anyone wants worlds as big as the PC version. It's impossible to find anything and extremely easy to permanently lose your home if something goes wrong. For example, I wanted to find a jungle in a world I was playing on but I never even saw one. Even after exploring for about half an hour if not longer. When I gave up and tried to find my way home, I had to go into creative mode and fly around for 10-15 minutes because compasses and maps are useless in the PC version. Maps barely show anything and my compass didn't lead me to my bed for some reason. It lead to the original spawn point which was nowhere near my house. Not to mention that if I want to find a village I need to start new worlds until I spawn near one, which crashed the game at least 7 times one time I tried it! How does any of that sound appealing? Sure, the 360 worlds are a bit small but now people want infinite worlds on the One version. If it does end up having infinite worlds and the same map and compass mechanics as the PC version, I might stop playing Minecraft for good.
People want infinite worlds because it eliminates the worry of ever running out of resources, having everything you need in one world (not needing to spawn anything in because it's missing in the limited world), no need to make a new world because you have 30,000,000 x 30,000,000 to build and explore in, and many other reasons.
Some people just want to explore. Some people want to build a lot or build very large things. There are so many reasons to want bigger worlds. I doubt that we'll see infinite worlds because even most multiplayer servers on the PC do not have infinite worlds as it's too much of a strain on the server. Most servers limit the size of their worlds so it only generates so far. The only place that really has a "seemingly" infinite world is single player on the PC version.
I for one don't necessarily want the seemingly infinite worlds of the PC version, but I would like something much larger than the extremely limited 864x864 of the 360 Edition. Anything higher than that by a decent margin will be a marked improvement on the next gen versions for me.
I hear you.
I got lost from my base twice by wandering too far away and had to start over at new locations. The world is just too big.
When I got lost the third time, I got smart. I started a new world, but my base is built at my spawn point. Now my compass will always lead me home- if I decide to wander again. Another tip is (for PC players) to F3 and write down the coordinates of your home (hindsight is always 20/20). But, what I've discovered is there's no real reason to stray all that far from home, unless you just like to wander around gawking at the scenery. You pretty much have it all, and plenty of it, fairly close to home. An 'infinite' world is a lot more a state of mind than a necessity. If you need more room than a 360/ps3 size world gives you- you need to get outside more.
Infinite worlds don't impress me.... at all.
There are literally thousands of rules and other restrictions in MC. Why some people decide to focus obsessively about the world size restriction is beyond me.
I'm all for bigger worlds, but within reason. I understand wanting worlds big enough to build and supply resources for an extended period of time. Although the best part about the world size in the 360 version is the fact that you start with a map and the entire world fits on it. I never felt lost and I knew I would be able to find my way home. It was also nice having every biome within a days journey. I would be satisfied with 2,500x2,500 or 5,000x5,000 on the Xbox One. Who knows, it might even be 10,000x10,000 for all we know. I wish 4J would at least tell us how big the worlds and multiplayer will be.
This is going to sound strange coming from me... who IS perfectly happy with the 360 world size on any system. However, that doesn't mean I can't show some empathy towards those who hold an opposite opinion from mine. The most compelling reason I've heard so far is not about fear of running out of resources already found in a world... but in not being able to acquire new resources as they are added in updates without either abandoning a world that they have been building in for some time or going into creative mode (which is something Xbox people seem more reluctant to do than PC people... probably because of the stigma associated with the leaderboards and achievements being disabled in those worlds). They would also like to be able to have more players playing in a world at a time (although altering the system to "infinite" worlds would not necessarily enable this).
Still, I see a LOT of benefits to having small worlds and really don't mind having a collection of individual ones based on individual themes and that don't have a lot of the "stuff" that has been added to the game since each of those worlds was first created. They are, to me now as snapshots of a build locked in its proper time... I can go back to look at it whenever I want without worrying about it's mood or theme getting altered (or perhaps tainted) by the changes to Minecraft itself beyond that time.
In its simplest form: If it ain't the PC for the 360, people will complain, and to them I say, "Then shut up and go play on the PC."
As for your map problem, you know you can enlarge the size of your map to encompass a very large region by surrounding it with paper multiple times...right?
Or just do what I do--make my house near X/Z = 0 and use F3 to return home.

Well, that would've helped if I had any idea. That doesn't change my view on oversized worlds though. In response to your suggestion to stick to certain coordinates, I prefer building near villages.
Being the builder I am, I think that it would be amazing if you could choose in the menu before stating a world how big it could be. For those who want to build a small town or something they could use a smaller map and not worry about people wandering about the map. But for those who wanted to build a big RPG that people could wander about they could use the larger maps to their advantage
I don't want INFINTE worlds, but i do want bigger worlds.Because from one world i started in TU5 i mined out the Hole world Y16 and under and wans't able to get any more diamonds-I can't believe my eyes i mined out the hole world Y16 down. Also i mined the half the world down from height limit and now i only have half the world left with proper Gen(Other half just bedrock!)
I had to stick with Cobbolestone once i ran out of iron and diamond(Right now have 100 Large chest with of stacks and stacks of cobbolestone) until TU14 will i was finally able to heal zombie villagers and start i Iron farm!
so when the XBOX ONE edition comes out i'll 1st of all strict mine in my LARGER world for diamonds!(Worlds are now transferable )
I don't want infinite worlds, but some choice of map size and dimensions would be nice. I would like the option to sacrifice area for a world with more depth. Aside from that, I like how MCXBLA maps function. Specifically chunk loading mechanics. The benefits of this have been outlined in a thread shortly after release. The information should still be relevant.
Most people don't use the super sized worlds when playing on the PC, but thats not to say that it doesn't come in handy when new biomes show, and new features ect. I've never had the PC version crash as the OP makes it sound like the PC version is 'unstable', in fact i don't think i've ever had the PC version crash on me, except when playing with mods, and maybe early alpha versions (long long long ago).
Also servers have the ability to 'scrap' loaded but not modified chunks, can't remember the cleanup crap involved but i know its possible.
In respects to getting lost on the PC, no offense but it shows that your not used to playing on the PC. Once one finds a good site to call their home, you need to hit that F3 key and write down your cords, later it will become a bit easier once you have beacons and other landmarks available to help navigate. Lets face it the world is a pretty big place and its not hard to get lost, but all the tools are there to help you, you just need to use them.
Personally i could care less if the map size increased or not, but i would like to have the chunk loading/unloading mechanics that is on the PC, as I think that would seriously help with lag and allow more entities, ect. I believe this mechanic will hit the xbox one version eventually, as the xbox one version can guarantee the existence of a hard drive, and thus should be allowed much bigger worlds, and PC loading/unloading mechanics. Only time will tell.
You know.... you actually don't have to traverse the whole map if it were infinite. I love how people want to punish or restrict others because they don't want to do something. If infinite worlds were introduced, which I am completely for, it really wouldn't hurt how you play. You can still stay in a little area the entire time.
If I didn't like pistons because of the way they worked should I demand that 4J remove them and let the rest of the world deal with it or should I just NOT use them.... because I don't have to use them and it wouldn't matter either way if they were in the game or not.

... but people who want infinite worlds can't seem to stop trying to "punish" 4J for making a call when they first decided what might be necessary to ensure they could squeeze this game onto the Xbox 360 and have it run at an acceptable framerate with acceptable redstone mechanics. They want them to spend a fortune reprogamming the game on a very nearly obsolete system just because they want to wander farther or are afraid they might run out of resources and they don't want to "recycle" the resources they have already collected or they don't want to go into creative mode to collect new items as they've been subsequently added to the game or they don't want to be bothered to just survive a first night again and recollect some basic supplies to start up in a new world whenever the game updates or they just don't want to keep old builds in old files and visit them periodically by launching those "finished" worlds separately or they don't want to really play it on a PC (where their utopia "infinite" world already allegedly exists)
It's really just a question of two groups of people on different sides of a fence being STUBBORN and UNREASONABLE. The game is what it IS... 4J made a call because, right or wrong, they believed at the time it was what was needed to do to get the game to work on a system 1/4 the size of the system required to run it on the PC AND to accommodate the requirements of Microsoft and Live as well (which was and is a factor that is outside of their control).

I totally agree. The 360 edition is what it is and there are too many people that complain about the size and limitations and so forth. I'm talking about upcoming features for the One, though. Given all the hardware and the decision to go for 30,000,000 block worlds or whatever number it is at would be great and I'm concerned about the push to not go for that. We understand the limitations on the 360 and there's nothing to be done about that. The real question is, given the ability, why would we hate PC-style worlds on next gen consoles? Plus, I don't think the larger world crowd is unreasonable. You can fit a 862x862 world in an "infinite" world but you can't fit an "infinite" world in a 862x862 world...

They may indeed change it on the One now (it's their business decision to make if they can see some profit in it). However, there will also likely be a "price" for that; namely, it will probably mean that they will no longer spend the time and staff resources to program updates for the X360 (and PS3) since the ongoing programming for the two generations of consoles could no longer piggyback on each other. So far, most people are indicating a desire to see the X360 Edition updated for awhile yet (which is something 4J did promise awhile back). They have also promised bigger worlds for the Xbox One (even if they don't change the chunk loading)... and no one knows how much bigger 4J is thinking of... yet, people whine about the likelihood of Xbox One worlds not being big enough.
Infinite worlds on the PC are not all sunshine and bunnies when it comes to updates... they still suffer from climate/biome shift (for example) and new terrain after updates can still have what many consider to be odd placement regarding already existing biomes (i.e. snow next to desert). Your post implied that people could just not use the added space so they should join in asking for it even if they don't use it... Is not wanting to get lost in a massive world any less valid than not wanting to enter creative mode to get updated blocks? - particularly when the same person claims not to care about leaderboards or achievements (which is the only penalty imposed by the game for entering creative mode)? (Personally, I think they contain about the same degree of pettiness.) However, the people who like small worlds have NEVER asked that Mojang reprogram the entire PC version in order to put a small world on the PC so they can`t get lost...
My point really is that, by now, 4J has earned some trust... why not just wait to see what they do come up with instead of complaining about the Xbox One world size before the game is even released on the Xbox One?
I'm perfectly content with the current world size, but I definitely wouldn't complain if there was any sort of expansion. It'd probably make it easier to get a good amount of variety in a world, so you wouldn't have to seed hunt as much if you wanted a world with, say villages, temples, and Extreme Hills.
I definitely get the exploration aspect behind bigger worlds though.
If infinite worlds were introduced, which I am completely for, it really wouldn't hurt how you play. You can still stay in a little area the entire time.
It would absolutely hurt the way I play, destroy it in fact. I tried playing the PC version earlier but no matter how long I explored, no matter how far I traveled, I could not find a village, desert, or jungle. Why would I stay in a little area the entire time? Isn't one of the main parts of Minecraft exploring? Unfortunately on the PC version, exploring is an endless nightmare!
Plus, I don't think the larger world crowd is unreasonable.
They aren't a "larger world" crowd, they are people literally demanding that the Xbox One version has infinite worlds. That sounds pretty unreasonable to me!
I tried playing the PC version earlier but no matter how long I explored, no matter how far I traveled, I could not find a village, desert, or jungle.
That's what seeds are for. I've seen seeds for the Pc version that had all of those things within looking distance of one another. Same would be true of the console versions with bigger worlds. People will finds seeds with exactly what you're looking for.
They aren't a "larger world" crowd, they are people literally demanding that the Xbox One version has infinite worlds. That sounds pretty unreasonable to me!
Some are demanding it because one, 4J has said that it will have larger worlds and two, with the specs of the Xbox One there really isn't a reason that it couldn't have the seemingly "infinite" worlds of the PC version. The only feasable reasons is that 4J just doesn't know how to make it happen or that they (Microsoft, Mojang, or 4J) decide to make it smaller on purpose.

While it would be pointless to have the 30,000,000 x 30,000,000 blocks on the Xbox One and PS4 versions, I for one definitely want more than 864 x 864. I'd be cool with a world anywhere between 5,000 x 5,000 to 15,000 x 15,000. The latter being the largest server I ever played on when playing the PC version. It was immense and more than enough to hold 200 people without ever really seeing another player.

No, you're right. Infinite worlds are not larger worlds than what we have. They'll probably be about the same or smaller.
I don't know why people have this 'safety net' mentality. They want every biome, every mineral, every asset within arms reach. Minecraft is all about freedom. Period. And the best part is the freedom to fail. I know, freedom is scary to some. No pre-planned objectives. No arbitrary boss to fight. You're on your own. As far as villages go, I was in the same position in my PC world. I couldn't find one to save my life. But you know what I did? I made one using infected villagers and now the population is over 120. What ever you want to do, you can do it! This is Minecraft.
