When Minecraft was originally released for the Xbox 360, the item limit was 200, meaning that if you had a farm that dropped more than 200 items at a time (such as a huge semi-automatic wheat farm), any items over 200 would simply disappear. I recall that with TU11, 4J "increased" the item limit for paintings and item frames, although I have no idea what the new item limit is for those (does anyone know?). I've seen nothing, however, suggesting that the item count for all other items has increased. As I'm working on building a mega farm and want to make sure that it doesn't generate more than items at one time than can exist in the game, I'd greatly appreciate any insight anyone may have on this topic,
I think the limit has stayed the same. That's why they introduced item stacking in TU12; all similar items that are close to each other will combine to become one item in the world, even though it could be 10 items once you pick them up. Before, 64 items of wheat on the ground would be 64 separate items but now they can become 1 item with stacking (I think it's 64...). I remember this was a huge problem before when items didn't stack and it was causing lag and items to disappear.
Edit: I tested it and items dropped on the ground do stack up to 64 per stack, just like in the inventory.

Are you sure there is automatic item stacking when the same items are next to each other? I looked online and couldn't find anything stating that TU12 came with item stacking. It isn't listed in the update notes. See http://minecraft.gam...on_history#TU12 As of TU12, dropped items were rendered in 3D, but that is not the same as stacking. I don't doubt you're right--I just can't see it referenced on the Internet as something in the current xbox game. If the items stack, that would cause me to build a very different farm from the one I'm currently planning, so any insight would be greatly appreciated.

The stacked items was an update from PC version 1.3.1. 4J gives us updates from across the board with a general 'as close to' PC equivalent.
Individual, stackable items near each other on the ground now become one item stack.

Appreciate your feedback. As you know, the updates from 4J don't precisely track the PC updates. For instance, 1.3.1 also included writing in books, adventure mode, and sub-biomes, none of which exist in the Xbox version to this day. As I said, I don't doubt you are right. It seems that I am able to pick up more items than I could before TU12 without them instantly disappearing. It is odd, however, that the auto-stacking functionality seems to have never got reflected in the patch notes for TU12.
I do a fair share of farming and I have not seen any form of auto stacking. However I do see more than 100 items out at the same time. As far as their being a max I have not done any testing so I can't say. I'm pretty sure it's quite high (I would say well over 300), but you will have to test to see how many items you can have out before something happens.

As far as not noticing item stacking... a lot of people don't. Take a stack of gunpowder. Then start dropping them one at a time close to each other and you'll notice they start grouping into one item. That's item stacking. And unless you are offline playing in a pre-TU12 world (meaning you haven't received any updates since TU11) it happens automatically.
