cats can be used to defend your house from creepers, they can be tames with raw fish and you find them in the jungle
dogs fight zombies, skeletons and spiders for you, they are tames with bones and found in the forest or taiga biome
Either read the wiki (mind you not everything will be exactly the same as the 360's) or find someone like me who has read pretty much the entire wiki.
Same, I like to read the wiki when I'm bored. Some adice from me:
1. Always keep spare iron, wood, and cobble on you. If your away from home, you can craft extra swords, armor, or anything to help you survive
2. Carry a bucket around. Maybe keep some water in it too. You can use it to clear grass, get rid of enderman, or get your self down deep holes.
3. Have a half stack of food with you always. You need to waste time farming if you already have it with you. Steak, pork and chicken are the best, but baked potatoes and pumpkin pies are good too.
4. If you stay up at night to fight, carry around an extra sword and keep your hunger bar full at all times.
5. Tame wolves. They make great company, and can help you out in a fight. 2-3 is plenty, any more might get in the way. They do tend to jump in front of your sword or pickaxe, so bring rotten flesh to feed them with.
