So my friends an I are in the middle of creating a Fantasy Minecraft World for our, and mutual friends, enjoyment. When creating towns, castles, mines, and ruins we wish that the Pen in Quill would of been included a long time ago. Now in the PC version I rarely use the object to my own use but when making a roleplaying world the object is pretty important. I mean it servers a point from History books, Religious Passages, Songs, Adventurers last words and advice, Inns record books, Mining supply counts, Spell books, or just ancient books and readings. I know that they said they weren't going to add them, and probably never will, but does anyone know exactly why? I know the item doesn't add much to the overall game but a lot of items do next to nothing! Does anyone else think they should be included just for the hell of it.
I don't care either way, really, and I doubt they'll be added any time soon.
I worked around it in my map by sending each participant a Rich Text Document file instead.
The document allowed me to use various fonts, colours, and sizes, which actually gave more life to the map than written books in the game itself.
"Caring" has nothing to do with it. They simply can't add every little thing that someone wants. If only 1% wants _____ and 50% would rather have _______, guess which gets added and which doesn't.
4J has dedicated themselves to releasing constant free updates and bug fixes to not only the Xbox 360 Edition but now the PS3 Edition, Vita Edition, PS4 Edition, and Xbox One Edition.
So yes they clearly do not care about the people who bought the games because they don't want to add one little thing.
I think a big part of the problem is the system in Xbox for typing text isn't very user-friendly for typing long blocks of texts. So I can understand why 4J hasn't considered the pen and quill a high priority for future updates. It's a nice item with lots of creative potential, but unless Xbox makes it easier to type longer texts, I doubt I personally would use it in the Xbox edition.
God! Please use the search function; this topic was discussed to death back around Minecon2013. It is a technical limitation of the xBox360 just like world size, player count, etc.
The xBox system will never get the pen and quill so long as Microsoft insists on it's current generation of text-chat censoring. All text within the game world (signs, etc.) pass through M$ text filter. The inclusion of long-form text such as a book and quill would overload the system and cause lag at best and crashes at worst. (This was demonstrated back during TU10/TU11).
BTW - if you want to type long-text (for xBox live messages, etc.) just plug a USB keyboard in, it works just fine.
I agree with electricblooz that the Book and Quill will never be in console (360, PS3) versions but maybe next gen. I might be wrong but I think the censorship of signs was removed. I haven't tested it but 4J hinted to that on their twitter page.
Edit: On Mar 26, 4J tweeted not to tell anyone because Stampy Cat tweeted that there was no more waiting for approvals on signs... I haven't even checked into this further. https://twitter.com/4JStudios/status/448849413126250497

As far as I remember when it was heavily discussed, it was left out because, like someone else mentioned in here, the text input isn't very user-friendly. But it still seems to be wanted by quite a few people considering how much it's brought up, so maybe it will get put in later on. Unless of course, like you said, there really are problems with it due to technical limitations.

Stay fluffy~
So they don't care about us then?
Mewtwo is the best pokemon!

Formerly known as ORabbit around these parts.
