I have a feeling they won't utilize the full potential of next-gen consoles and only make worlds twice as big or something weird like that. They could easily make each world's maximum size be 1gb, which would be more than 20x larger than current worlds on the 360 edition (fully explored world is like what, 40mb? 1024mb= 1gb). Each world is approx. 800 blocks in each direction? It could be 16,000. This is using downscaled numbers as well, so it would likely be more. An employee of 4J confirmed that the worlds aren't smaller on the 360 because of computing issues, but rather because not everyone will have a Hard drive. And lets be honest, most people just walk in one direction and will most likely not explore the entire map if it was that large, unless thats their primary goal. Math is math, so I'm certain that my above calculations are correct, and there really shouldn't be any reason not to have absolutely enormous worlds. So I hope they make minecraft on next-gen consoles what it should be, normal minecraft with a couch and a controller.

* The consoles aren't even but 6 months old of a 10 year cycle. All the game developers don't even know what they can do yet, and it's going to be amazing what they will be able to do 1-5 years from now. Don't worry about it.
* I think 99% of the console 'larger world' advocates would be absolutely ecstatic if their worlds doubled in size. There's always that 1% who will never be satisfied unless there's an 'infinite' world, but they're also usually the ones who want everything to be either an option or customizable. Besides, we have no idea exactly how big the worlds will be, only that they'll be 'bigger'. I'd wait till we know something for sure.
* What's a 'normal' MC? Normal for consoles or normal PC version? You'll never have the PC version on consoles anymore than you'll have the console versions on the PC. And you for sure can't have both.
Like Geneo said, I'd be happy if the world just doubles in size.
I have always thought they might make the worlds around 5000 x 5000 or something for the Xbox One and PS4 versions. Maybe even larger. I think the biggest server I ever played on on the PC version was around 15,000 x 15,000 and took FOREVER to walk from one side to another. Even with 200 people on it, you hardly ever saw another person. That size would be a bit much but not out of their reach.
Honestly, if you're going to worry about something that will ultimately be so insignificant to this game as the size of the world and whether or not game developers will ultimately utilize all the computing power of a new console, then all you're going to get is gray hair before you're twenty.
You say it yourself, most people on the Xbox One will never completely utilize all of the space available in their worlds anyway... just as the vast majority haven't completely maximized the use of their little Xbox 360 worlds either. Most seem to spend too much time on the forums here complaining about what they don't have instead of truly enjoying what they do have. My advise to you would be to spend that time enjoying all the facets of this game that are already here rather than worrying about world size. We already know that the Xbox One will be getting larger worlds... and I'm sure they realize that people want as large a world as they can deliver.
I agree that doubling the world size would be great. In fact, I wouldn't want it any larger than that, since I'm kind of a completist and would be frustrated that I could never find every cool thing. The main reason I would like a larger world is to almost ensure that every biome would be present (variety is the spice of life, right?).
I started playing a new seed after TU14 and it's amazing: 6 villages (4 large, 2 small), 6 wells, a mushroom island and a desert temple (and probably a jungle temple). But no extreme biome, therefore no emerald ore. But having so many villagers at the start makes trading easy enough, and the emeralds flow in. One thing makes up for the other. It's like UpUp just said, it's better to just enjoy all the facets of the game for what they are, not what they are not. Plus, given the ongoing support and updates, I'm sure there'll be enough new stuff coming along to keep it fresh and tasty.
Well I do see what you're all saying, and to be honest I was perfectly fine with the world size on the 360. I kinda thought it was better that it wasn't infinite because you would never get lost and the worlds were big enough for even the largest builds. But, if minecraft was ever updated to the current PC version with all the new biomes and such, twice as big just wouldn't be enough. Every biome would have to be downsized, but I assume most people wouldn't mind. Personally, I would totally play minecraft on PC, if my computer could handle it that is. And I don't want to buy a new computer simply because I don't have the funds at the moment. And consoles are just better in my opinion, you don't have to fiddle with a bunch of nonsense to keep it up and running. I just think that doubling the world size wouldn't be worth buying it again, and I don't think we'll be getting servers, we'll just be able to have more people in a multiplayer session. They'll probably do more than double the world size though, and all this is likely for nothing. But yes it would be cool to be able to pick "large biomes" world type or travel a long ways to find that mushroom biome. I am both surprised and glad to see that most people would be perfectly contempt with 1600 blocks in each direction, I am assuming you're more about the building aspect of the game. I'm definitely more of a wanderer, and I don't like having to load 5 new worlds when I could just have one.

I'm not really following your reasoning... to get a larger world at all, you'll still need to come up with the funds to purchase the Xbox One. Larger worlds are just not in the cards for the Xbox 360. So, why not just invest that money on a new computer?

Small problem with that. I already have an xbox one, and I know 360 worlds aren't getting bigger. If I did want to buy a computer, I would have to make sure it was worthwhile, and the cheapest one is $850 so far. I have a job, I could buy it now, but if you're good with your money you'll know that there are better things to spend it on such as new tires for the car, bills in general, the transmission on my mom's truck went bad, lots and lots of money. Yes I did buy an Xbox One, but it was only $500, and that was back in... November or December? Can't remember. And I had a bit of money stockpiled at that time. And to be honest, I don't want to be hunched over in a chair for an hour straight, very very bad on your back.

Thanks for clarifying things... makes much more sense now.
