Hey all. I'm new to Minecraft. I play on Xbox360. I have a house with a small pen outside the back door. I keep about 5 sheep in it. Sometimes I'll breed the sheep and after a few minutes the baby will die right in front of me. Or I'll go back out and one of the adults will be dead. I am playing on peaceful mode so I know there are no enemies killing the sheep. Does anyone know why they would die? Is there a maximum number you can have in a pen? Or does only a certain percentage of newborns survive?
As mentioned it is more likely a bug. I know I have seen more than just sheep disappear, like cows & pigs. I know they didn't despawn, as the pen is not that big, and having a solid block around a few of the edges might be what is the bug.
I was think of doing what the person above mentioned, as that seems logical enough to work, at least for now as a work around.
Building a farm in a cave right now is not as good as it was before for the moment. So fencing and crowd control may help. Now only if they can fix the jumping constant they do trying to get up something that is 1.5 tall. Well hopefully things will be sorted out eventually.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Hey Thanks guys. The pen is on the back of my house so only 3 sides have fences. And yes...when I have witnessed them die they appear to get stuck in the blocks that make up the house. I think I'll just move the pen away from the house 1 block length so I can fence it in completely. The jumping thing is also very annoying. Last night I made the pen 2 fences high since sheep were getting out with just the one fence. Hopefully an update will fix that soon.
It doesn't matter how wide the pen is or what types of block it is (besides anvils which for some reason you can live inside of) What is happening in most cases is, the baby sheep will "grow up" and get stuck in the wall suffocate and die. Adult sheep will sometimes attempt the climb the wall, merge with it, suffocate and die. There are other instances including villagers, where the location of the villager doesn't update for you or the game and dies or despawns and it APPEARS the villager just died for no reason, when really it's just despawned. I like to call that little glitch "ghosting".
It happens a lot when an animal or village was/is in a minecart, the minecart will move but the villager's location wont change with the model that is moving/walking/breeding/dying etc. Instead, the model will stay in a fixed location and naturally when the player walks away, it will either despawn or just flat out die. It's just the new update, when breeding animals try to keep the babies as far from any walls as possible and you should be fine. I have all mine in 1x1 pens and as long as they're near the center of the block they are fine.

OOOOOOOOH, so THAT'S what happened to my dog...
