Since the OP has included the term "tools" in the titleI just can't resist throwing in my favorite... the pickaxe. To make it, just follow this tutorial in the Wiki: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Pickaxe

I prefer bare hands than pickaxe.
"bare hands" works for every block in the game
I think my favorite invention is the Dihydrogen Monoxide Deconflagration Device. It's rather technical in nature, but anyone should be able to use it effectively.
Ingredients:
1.) Bucket
2.) Block of water.
Fill the bucket with water and, if you happen to become set on fire, just dump the water bucket on to the ground. Lather, rinse and repeat until the fire is out.
I have a few favorite inventions on my pvp world but I cant locate them on youtube atm
1-Is "The BUDDER cannon" (BMS)
A weapon of my own design, I always have one placed on the top of my house, However it's lengthy to make and isn't accurate, but it's a great, awe-inspiring, colon-loosening weapon. take 2 dispensers (or 4) place them a few blocks from pistons facing them. Next, build a circuit of repeaters that is activated by a lever, run the circuit up to the dispensers and time it so just after halfway through the circuit the connection divides and connects to the pistons power supply (any redstone contraption that can randomize outputs with 1 solid input) now, what should happen is, when the circuit reaches the dispensers power supply the dispensers will randomly fire arrows at the pistons, (you can include lava if you want flaming arrows) as the arrows hit the pistons they'll stay there. Now, halfway through the circuit the pistons will start moving back and fourth effectivly (dropping) the arrows toward the ground.
This area is where you will build the final piece to the cannon. Just like a normal cannon you want a block of water blocked by up to 4 pieces of tnt. as the arrows fall onto the tnt, you'll need to finish off the circuit into the tnt blocks. The tnt will start flashing, with more arrows falling down, as the tnt explodes (if you've done it right) you will have a 360 degree coverage of arrows flying out from the top of your house. Raining fire arrows wont be put out by water from rain and can travel a recorded 200 blocks away in every direction with nearly every other square being hit.
Though the pattern is randomized when your base is being attacked by 3 or more people and suddenly there's a wall of arrows flying at them from your fortress, 9/10 times they will turn around and run. You can also have this set up to be triggered by a trip wire or pressure plate but it's not as effective then pulling a lever.
2-Enderman TNT melon.
Take a melon, put it down, place a torch of redstone below it, make a redstone wire connect to another redstone torch, place a tnt block beside the newly unlit torch. Break the first part of your wire, then the first torch. (i havent tried this since TU14 release) what happens is when you, and enderman, or another player breaks the melon. It'll update the block below it, this triggers the redstone torch to suddenly activate and sets the tnt off.
3-The flaming water ladder (BMS)
Very simple to make, make a water ladder, at the top make the same layout you did for the budder cannon, but instead this time dont put tnt in the water and have the piston drop arrows into the water ladder. When a player starts swimming up it, either have a pressure plate or tripwire to set the trap off, half way up make the bottom of the ladder close and the arrows fly! The arrows (even fire arrows) will drop into the water (fire arrows seem to do more damage) the player/mob will get hit and will more than likely sink to the bottom where they will be battered to death.

I build what everyone builds when they start a survival world. A Turing-complete CPU then write a program for Berzenheim's line algorithm and project it onto a GPU with an 864 x 864 display to plot the most efficient course to the nearest cave.
I use it to cook food and smelt ores and cobblestone to make stone bricks....
Blaze farms are good for XP, fuel for furnaces (blaze rodes) and infinite glowstone.
Enderfarms are also good. Excellent amount of XP and infinite enderpearls (gotta love this ones)
Mewtwo is the best pokemon!
I prefer bare hands than pickaxe.

Neither with a pickaxe
Very handy device indeed
