I saw on a video that mobs spawn above Y-128 now, but how much higher? Has anyone tried any testing or do they spawn anywhere above Y-128?
I'm making a hostile mob drop grinder for creepers, skellys and zombies in my new survival map and if I can go to Y-200+ I wouldn't need to light up caves first.
Yes I tested this in my test world. They spawn up to 256 now or 254 foot position with two blocks for spawning clearance. Yeah, it looks like Doc's sky trap is a go!

Does this change include the nether? I've built platforms above the nether to see if I can get anything to spawn but nothing does..
Most mobs I believe are "Free range" in the nether (minus ghast, blazes, and typically magma cubes) However I think zombie pigmen still only spawn on netherrack and are far/few between when it comes to spawn locations. (typically) I know prior to the update pigmen farms needed to be layered and frequented often in order for just a few pigmen to spawn.
I believe mob spawning can now occur above the nether. But portals, I think, can link from the top of the Nether to the Overworld but not the other way around. So you can go from the roof of the Nether to the Overworld but when you go from the Overworld to the Nether it won't place you above the Nether again.
Have you tested this because i tried and couldnt get any pigmen to spawn.
Perhaps i just werent going high enough up. I hope thats what it is because i would love to a gold farm!
Remember, the roof of the Nether is bedrock and mobs can't spawn on that. You need to lay down a block that supports spawning like nether rack. I will test it here hopefully today.
