My 8 year old son was playing xbox live tonight and someone destroyed his world by placing lava all over everything. He spent several months of game play building this world. We tried to exit without saving and turing off the console in an effort to get the world restored. Nothing worked.. Is their a way to restore his world to what it once was or is his world destroyed? Forgive my ignorance, I am new to the minecraft game.
Probably destroyed if it was saved in a destroyed state and you didn't make a backup of the world before it was destroyed.
I would recommend making regular backup copies if he wishes to continue to play online and maybe select his friends better, or otherwise limit what they can and can't do with the host options.
You might also want to turn off the auto-save while playing online, that way he can make sure the world is fine before it saves over his work... especially if he is playing in creative mode.
You're pretty much shot.
As said before, backup copies of the world can be a real life-saver sometimes.
And let this be a lesson to be more choosy with whom he plays.
A lot of people are complete butts and "Invite only" on and "Friends of friends" off will help cut back those people a lot....
Most important thing is to be VERY careful about who you let into your worlds. There are too many "griefers" out there who find it amusing to destroy the hard work of innocent players like your son. It is a sad thing, but people are sick.
The great thing bout Minecraft, though, is that building and mining is the fun, so I hope he can enjoy building and creating a new, even better world. Not all Minecraft players are idiots.
That's terrible. I hope your son isn't taking it too hard.
Anyway, like others have said, I would suggest turning the Autosave option off when playing online, and having the option "Allow friends of friends" turned off as well. That will prevent random people from joining the game.
People mentioned making a backup copy of the save file. If you don't know the way to go about doing that you will need a thumb-drive to use as the destination device. The game doesn't allow multiple copies of the same world to exist on the same drive so make sure you don't move the files from one drive to the other as that will overwrite the other save (changing the name of the file doesn't prevent this from happening either).
That's really about it. The only other advice is to select playmates who are trustworthy, which shouldn't be too hard. You can have your son start a thread on the forum here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forum/222-mcx360-multiplayer/
to find suitable players.
I'm so sorry that your son was a victim. Online griefers are a big problem with Minecraft despite the anti-griefing measures that are already in place (like being able to turn off the autosave and the "friends of friends" features). As a result of your post, I have posted a suggestion int he suggestions section asking for a separate autosave file that the game would generate at the very beginning of each new session (i.e. when a world is first re-launched by a player after having fully exited the game and that would not be overwritten by the system until the next time the player launches that world from scratch. That way, if a griefing event occurs, that particular file save could be launched manually and only that most recent session's work in that world would have to be redone by the player. At any rate, I thought you would like to know that there are many people here who do see the need for several improvements to be made regarding anti-griefing measures.
