As we all know, hostile mobs despawn when the chunk they are in is outside of the player's viewing distance. However, passive mobs are not supposed to do this so that players can make effective farms. But, some bug is causing passive mobs to despawn in Xbox 360 Edition when the player gets too far away.
I'm not actually sure if this is caused by a bug or if a feature to prevent passive mobs from despawning has not yet been added to Xbox 360 Edition. Either way, I'd really like for my sheep, cows, chickens, and pigs not to disappear after some long journey I go on.
If your passive MOBs can't move more than 20 blocks at a time away from any single point, then they should not despawn. I haven't had any issue with this at all, and I travel around quite allot... however, I have noticed that passive MOB's are occasionally pathing into walls and end up killing themselves, suffocating.

Lol. One time, I was in my friends house and their pet Cat suffocated, and I felt like it was my fault.
On topic, GregNelson is correct when he said, " MOBs can't move more than 20 blocks at a time away from any single point, then they should not despawn."
In such circumstances I would agree that some clipping issue is at fault which causes creatures to unwittingly slay themselves. My sheep farm hasn't lost a single soul thus far. That is, of course, until I decide to test out a lava experiment inside the netherbrick fence.
I've been noticing the same thing, but it is only if I breed them in a small area. When they grow up, and they are on a block next to the edge when they do, they suffocate.
I have bred many sheep, and all the lambs die. The 2 adults are fine, just the babies die, and I actually have witnessed it. Sorry no video
Our animals in our barn were despawning after i changed the wood fences to cobble fences. Now i changed back to wood fences inside the barn and cobble fences outside the barn and no animals despawn. What happens is they glitch out of the corners and suffocate or despawn. Make sure u fence the corners of the barn and dont use cobble fence inside.

I believe that there is a reported bug where animals can jump up on cobblestone (and mossy cobblestone) walls... this would allow them to path more than 20 blocks if they had an exit point over the wall and potentially despawn if you moved too far away.
A great way to pen animals is plain old fence and use a piece of nether brick fence instead of a regular fence gate. The animals can't fit through the gap but you can. I use this design on all my pens. Works perfectly.
Terrible idea due to lag. Along time ago when there wasn't limited animals (AHH.. those were the time, good times good times)
You can literally kill a world from the amount of lag it creates just putting over 600 chickens in an area and if you make this "Passive mode" work you will be able to start this again due to the visibility rate.
What I mean is when you can no longer see an animal/monster you are able to spawn more animals.
Example
W = Water
> = Direction (This will be the for the water)
_ = Blocks
1 = pigs
2 = Spawned pigs
3 = Spawned pigs
V = Visibility line

Wastier is a word!

^^^^ Click it! You know you want to...

Ok lets say the max spawn for pigs is 5
~~~~~Stage 1
V
1 1 1 1 1
W> > > > > > > > > >
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
~~~~~Stage 2
V
1 1 1 1 1
W> > > > > > > > > >

~~~~Stage 3
V
2 1 1 1 1 1
W> > > > > > > > > >
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
~~~~~Stage 4
V
2 2 2 2 2 1*5
W> > > > > > > > > >
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
~~~~~Stage 5
V
3 3 3 3 3 2*5 1*5
W> > > > > > > > > >
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Remember max spawn rate was 5 and now its at 10 and going up this is why we cant have passive mode
