While the Anvil was prominently featured in TU14 teasers, one useful feature that has gone unnoticed is the ability to repair your tools without use of the anvil.
Similar to applying dye to armor, item repair is done in the inventory screen. Simply grab one worn-out tool from your inventory using the A button (X if any PS3 players are browsing through), hover it over another worn-out tool of the same type and material (ie, hold your iron pickaxe over another iron pickaxe), and press the X button (Square, for PS3 users.)
Tools repaired in this fashion will lose any enchantments and custom names applied to them; however, this style of item repair is very useful for making the most of your resources, such as combining powerfully enchanted tools that cannot be repaired on the anvil anymore in order to make a fresh tool to either re-enchant or repair a third enchanted tool.

AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! This is what I'm talking about! Thank you for mentioning this because I would have never seen it. I was wondering if there would be a way to repair like this in the future. One of the best features of repairing like this is that it does wipe enchantments away. So now you should be able to 'repair' a tool through a villager priest enchantment trade and then, if you don't like the enchantment, wipe it using the repair system, without the anvil of course. That way you are left with a brand new tool with no enchantments!!! Finally...
Repair through a villager priest only costs emeralds and then just buy another tool/weapon from a blacksmith and you're set.
I assume that this is the same concept as putting two items into the crafting grid on the PC.
Is there a 10% durability bonus along with the combined durability?
I've been revamping my adventure maps since TU14 came out, so I've yet to do suvivaly stuff.

On the PC, it's now a 5% bonus, and I think that's true on the console versions as well.
It doesn't seem substantial until you start repairing a lot of damaged tools. From what I can tell from the wiki, that bonus is a constant based on the maximum number of uses that a tool has, so you start to get bigger bonuses as you go along.
And anything that conserves resources even a tiny bit is useful for challenge maps!

When'd that change? Huh, I must've missed that when it happened.
I doubt that I'll ever really find it too useful except maybe when starting a new world (which I never do), but at least it's there for all those not-so-legal adventure maps....

Hey, only distributing maps and modifying save files is forbidden by the ToS. Building an adventure map, making a copy of your save file, and inviting friends to play while you turn yourself invisible in game isn't. Challenge maps can be done legit
Don't underestimate tool repair. Even when you have an uber-weapon/pick that can't be put through the anvil anymore, you can still use it to repair unenchanted weapons from your inventory, and the resulting repair can be enchanted and put through an anvil. It's amazing if you're like me and want to stretch everything out as long as you can.
Love the feature. It looks like you can't repair armor or fishing rods this way...
Not sure if this is a bug or if it works the same as it did on the PC... I watch a few PC Minecraft LP'ers and none of them really take advantage of item repair at all. No harm in reporting it as a bug to see what 4J says, I suppose.
you can also access the fireworks crafting grid and repair armor, tools and fishing rods. you have to have the materials to make a firework in your inventory first.
Edit: Access a crafting table with gunpowder and any color dye in your inventory and navigate to decorations and fireworks. open the fireworks interface and manually move the armor or tools into the grid, they will be greyed out as incompatible but it will still allow you to move them. remove the repaired item from the crafted item slot.

Retired StaffNone at all! But as I said, you also lose any enchantments and custom names on any gear you use in item repair off of the anvil.

Thanks for sharing... This will be useful early on for me when I couldn't really enchant anyhow.
