I assume you're talking about the On a Rail Achievement? The rail line must be 500 blocks long in a single direction, so you will need at least 500 rails. You'll also want a few extra rails at the start and finish and, if your line has any curves in it, you'll need more rails.
Rails are crafted in sets of 16, you you will need to make 32 sets of rails. Each set of 16 requires 6 iron, so you will need 192 iron for the rails alone. This is, of course, assuming that you are going to use only iron rails with no power rails by using a furnace minecart to push you regular minecart. Each minecart requires 5 iron, so you'll need 10 iron for that. You'll also need 8 cobblestone for the furnace to combine with one of the minecarts to make a furnace minecart. You will also need some coal to power the furnace minecart.
This is the barest minimum you will need. If you opt to use power rails, you'll need gold and redstone to craft them... but I'm sure you can do the math yourself.

to be honest, I never think of using a furnace minecart, but thas a great ideia!! its bether than makea loto powered rails!!
just knowing how much iron I gona use, thas helps a lot!!!
tks!

There's a glitch where you are allowed to duplicate Diamonds, Iron, Gold, Lapis only
When you do this it will be very easy to get this achievement and you can use the idea from above with the furnace to power the source it may take 10mins.

some glitch? and its hard to make?
I k'now that I can google about, but, if you already made this, you will have some personal coments about!!
Basically there is a lag glitch where if 2 things are happening to the same block (or stack of blocks) at the same time, there is a chance that that block can drop a real and a phantom copy of itself. the game will try to auto correct this if you try and use the phantom block in any way by just making it disappear, but for blocks that can be broken down into smaller components (like diamond, iron, gold, lapis lazuli), you can convert the phantom block to real integral parts (ingots or stones) if you use the player crafting interface (not a crafting table).
To get this glitch to work is usually done one of 2 ways.... the easiest is to mine and immediately place the block after you collect it until there is one block in your inventory and its twin/duplicate on the ground (I believe that the one in the inventory is the phantom, while the one on the ground would be real... you will want to do this against a wall (or corner) so that when the block breaks and drops, the drop bounces toward your character so you can drop as quickly after mining it as possible.
Another way to do this is to set of TNT near a chest with a block or stack of blocks in it, and use 'Y' to quick load the block to your inventory just as the TNT is expanding right before it blows up and destroys the chest.
Yet another way is to use a piston/mine method:
There seems to be a way to do this with most any stack-able item using TNT and a dispenser here:
course, there are duplication glitches to duplicate normal and powered rails using redstone and sticky pistons and several other glitches as well:

Why do people feel the need to cheat/glitch in order to accomplish this achievement? It's already half as long as it is on the PC (500 m vs. 1000 m) and you can usually collect a good portion of the rails needed from just a single abandoned mineshaft... and you can even use a Mineshaft finder app (at Chunkbase.com) to find the mineshaft to start with. Alternatively, start an iron golem farm and collect all the iron you could ever want from that.

Although I'm not going to defend exploiting glitches as not cheating... it seems to me that using an external mineshaft finder app constitutes a higher degree of cheating that being resourceful within the game... and exactly how is an iron golem farm all that different than a in game glitch exploit?
...and before you defend it too much, let me point out that the designers of the game obviously felt it was cheating for players to kill the golems without attacking them to the point that players have to strike the killing blow effective PC/Java version 8.1, otherwise they don't get the iron (only drops a flower if the golem dies from an outside/non-player force).

... it still doesn't answer my question about why people feel they need to cheat to accomplish this achievement. Even people who don't mind using apps or golem farms seem to want to specifically dupe glitch for this one. Many people brag about the chests full of iron they acquire while mining, so one can also just collect the 3 and a bit stacks of iron by mining the regular way or wait until they stumble onto a mineshaft and then acquire the achievement. It's really not that tough a thing to accomplish... I've done it... honestly... many times... and the additional benefit is that you have a working railroad in your world when you're done.

to me, its just for information that I ask how to make the glitch, but I like to pick up the itens in the old way, minning!
But, to be honest, my chest of iron have just 15 irons, and its hard to find more, I think I gonna have to use a chunk finder for some mineshaft ( I still dont find any... )
and I have a word shared whit 2 friends, sooo
Besides this achievement, I have to do "when pigs fly" and for that I need to be lucky to find a saddle....
Ok lets get this all Straight I don't cheat, I ran out of minerals in my world and I was forced to turn to Duplication for diamonds I Literally have a floating World above bedrock about 16 high.
I know your measurements aren't as extreme as mine are but until they Update the worlds somehow I'm stuck duplicating (Diamonds).
I played the game legit for 2 years I got this achievement through digging and from my own hard work. I'm just giving him a faster way to do it... Hell I say go for it legit-ly because there's more honor that way

This issue I specifically have with duplicating is that creative mode is legitimately available to everyone and is far more efficient than duplicating. The only consequence of using creative mode is the loss of leaderboards and achievements... So why would one duplicate rather than use creative mode?... unless it is to "fudge" the leaderboards and/or to gain achievements. You say categorically that you don't cheat, but who are you really fooling when you're adding to your mining totals on the leaderboards with a diamond pickaxe made from duplicated diamonds? The harsh reality is that your survival world is depleted and the depleted resources are, therefore, no longer available for your use to survive... just as it is IRL if we completely deplete a natural resource.
The On a Rail achievement is really the only one that takes any amount of time at all to accomplish so it seems to be the one that draws out the duplicators on the Xbox... even though it is already far easier to accomplish on the Xbox than on the PC. I'm just curious as to why that is? I often wonder how differently things would be IF 4J had left the achievements in effect on worlds that had been used in creative mode. Personally, I honestly think it would have save a lot of trouble if they had just just disabled the leaderboards and left the achievements on... or perhaps even just left the leaderboards turned on as well.
Personally, I don't really care about Leaderboards, I don't play in survival to compete with the Leaderboards, and it sounds like they are totally messed up anyway. I like exploring these glitches and trying them out in my 'test' worlds for academic purposes only, just to try them. I have yet to actually use any of them in my actual survival worlds that I actively play, as I really don't have any use for them there.
At the same time, I'm not going to begrudge anyone that wants to use these exploits either....but as I said above, I don't really care about the Leaderboards.

Cant find iron??? Minecraft has more iron than Tony Stark!

I know, its hard to belive, but i made a hugeeeee, really huge mining close to bedrock, and all I got is red stone and 4 diamonds!
Right now, i start to make a new mine, to see if I find another vein of iron, but is to hard!
Like I said before, the motive for this topic was just to know the amount of iron i was gonna need, not to make duplication ou using survival! I think using those will make the game lost the fun!!
(how I put pictures here? I like to show what I build in survivel, Its the first time I make some sooo huge and stylish!)

There is approximately on average 77 iron ore per chunk (16x16 block area) spread out between Y=1 to Y=63. Iron can occur pretty close to the surface, unlike Redstone, Diamond, Lapis, and Gold Ores.
