after the tutorial loaded, i saved and exited so that the tutorial scripts wouldnt start. i then noted the seed and went to regen it thinking that i would get another tutorial. i was wrong. there was no castle or even a minecraft sign in the sky.
for those of you who dont believe, i will post the seed info
Tutorial
Created in Survival Mode
Seed: 1227750481513469519
is the tutorial a special seed that cannot be regenerated, except by the "play tutorial" option?
No... the Tutorial is much like a mashup pack, the Seed will control the climate after the world is generated, but the Tutorial world is 'extracted' from a default save game with pre-built structures as you might make in creative mode.
So yeah, you will be missing the castle, the big MINECRAFT sign in the sky, the pirate ship with the creeper flag, etc. as these things are not part of the World Seed World Gen Algorithm when the world is first being created.
To expand a little on what GregNelson said, there are two parts to a world: one is the seed, which creates the map -- the biomes, terrain, etc. The other is any construction (or editing) which has taken place on it, such as the castle, flying Minecraft sign, hidden items, etc., from the tutorial world.
So if I were to give you the seed for my current 360 world, you'd get the exact same terrain I have, such as the village at the spawn point, the bluff over the river, and so on, but my house, mines, etc., wouldn't be there, because they're something that I built rather than something that the game created automatically. Most of what makes the tutorial world, well, a tutorial, is things that are constructed, rather than generated, so the seed can't recreate them.
To expand even further on the previous two entries... the tutorial sequence is very short and you can exit it prematurely by following the instructions that come up to do so. After you have done that, exit and save the world, then just select that world save (usually entitled "Tutoral World" from your game saves list). The world, with all the structures in tact, can then be played just like any other. Unlike the mash up pack worlds, which default to "created in creative mode," the tutorial world behaves like a world created in survival mode until you yourself load in in creative mode. That is, as long as you keep loading the tutorial world only in survival mode and do not activate host privileges, you will still be able to gain achievements and your activities will count towards the leaderboards (if you are using a Live enabled profile).
