No confirmation of the hostile mob spawning height in the change log for TU14 either........ Let the testing begin!! ...as soon as the update rolls out...
Yay, hostile mobs can now spawn above 128 all the way up to 256 at least. I wasn't too excited about the spawn rates but they were much, much higher than my current grinder which hovers around Y=90. Let the farms begin!
I put a sky trap at the ceiling and my spawn rates suck. I tested in creative and I was getting great spawn rates. The only thing I did differently was put trapdoors along the edge of each spawning pad which I never do. After I did that the mobs are spawning in ones but that can't be why, right?
I need to play with it a little. I can't figure out what is going on.

Nah, I do for my Enderman XP farm. My general mob farm is the basic four 8x8 platforms with the cross pattern water trench. It works perfectly in my creative test world. And it's not that the trapdoors are keeping them from falling. I've gone up to the bottom and I don't hear any mobs. The roof is exactly at 256 so I'm thinking about bringing the whole thing down 1 or 2 blocks, though I don't think that's why I'm not getting decent spawns.
It's working pretty good now. Don't know what I did (nothing really) but the spawn rates are excellent; way better than the same design I had just above sea level.
Glad to here it's working. I'm pretty happy with mine. It's nice to not have to light up miles of caves.
I just need to put a retractable roof on it and I'm done.
