Here are a few things I do whenspelunking (exploring caves) and was wondering what you do? Mainly I'm talking about massive cave/ravine/mineshaft/stronghold systems.
I mine every resource when I come across it.
Below level 17 I will mine dirt and gravel for two reasons. I use the dirt and gravel for building islands or sky towns and it's an easy material to mine that can expose good resources quickly.
I torch everything.
When I have mined a dead end cave I close it off with cobblestone and leave the torches in there.
I like to place a couple of dogs at the exit point underground. So if I'm getting close to the exit but maybe a level too low or too high I can hear the dogs barking.
I like to use a central mineshaft all the way down to bedrock for an exploration entrance. I also make a storage area/workshop at bedrock level.
I use netherrack at some intersections to show me the way back to the exit. I light the netherrack and place a torch on the side that leads home.
I build with odsidian so I mostly do not water bucket the lava. I use buckets to carry the lava back up and pour it in forms for building.
I use torches on my right hand side going in so I know the way out again. I like the dog idea, audio beacon! I usually take a cat in with me too and if i'm fiddling around mining or whatever, park the cat up as a creeper deterrent. Especially near high drops or lava pools. Too many times have I jumped to escape a creeper and met a sticky end.
I see so many people using weird things to help them navigate. Am I the only person that uses signs? I usually use glowstone rather than torches, for lighting up caves. I think it makes them look nice. Plus, I have a ton of glowstone from my blaze farm. Easier to farm them than to manually cut trees for more wood.
Another good audio cue is a pulsing piston, and it's somewhat more reliable.
It's funny when I think back to my early MC days, and panicking about getting lost in caves. Now I generally just keep exploring till I get out or just dig straight up in the hope I don't encounter any lava. XBOX worlds are small enough not to worry about getting lost!
