I've made a 10x10x4 pool of water way more than 24 sphyrical blocks away from spawn between Y axis 45-63. And can't get a squid to spawn. Any advice? Am I forgetting something?
Does other passive mobs spawn in the area? Might want to confirm you are not with 24 blocks of the area, and that you are not in a desert biome as passive mobs can' t spawn within deserts.
I'm sure it's far enough. And I do have an area close to it with passive mobs spawning on grass. But I don't have lots. And I know squids can spawn in desert biomes. I checked the wiki.
From what I've seen, squids seem to spawn exclusively in oceans for the 360...so no desert squids for you.

Is that area 10x4 wide and 10 deep, or 10x10 wide and 4 deep?
There is a spawning condition that the MOB must not collide with other blocks or entities, and the squid is a fairly large sized MOB, your '4' range could be severely limiting the available spawning area, causing the spawn algorithm to frequently fail. I'd try extending (doubling) your water area to something more like: 10x10x8
When the minecraft came out over a year ago I built a glasss tower to the sky and had four 1x1 block water falls coming from the top that flowed into small pools (3x3x3). Of the 4 small pools a squid would almost always have spawned in at least one of the pools. Since then I have tried several different methods to make a squid aquarium and they all failed.

...and see if that helps.
