I have two sons who both want to play online at the same time. Is this possible if I purchase an additional gold live membership (we currently have one gold live membership). We only have a xbox 360.
No. You said you only have a xbox 360, which implies you only have one. I don't believe you can have two people in splitscreen while both are playing online unless you're hosting the game.

Yes it is possible, you don't even need the second membership.

Incorrect.
If your XBox is hooked up to a HDTV with an HDMI cable you can play split screen with 2 players. Only the first player (the one who started the game) needs to have Gold for both players to play online.

Oh, sorry. I thought it required 2 peasentboxes to play online.
We do have a Hdmi cable/Hdmi tv. They play split screen offline all the time. I had the gold membership start game but the other wasn't aloud to join. Any suggestions?
Per the wiki, you can play local split screen using local, silver, or gold memberships. However, the 'guest' account(s) can only be signed in at the start of the session (not mid-session). Online split screen can only be done with at least one gold membership.
I'm trying to make this work and my son can't join with me.
It keeps asking him to pick a profile but when he does it then asks him to add his gamer profile (as in another Gold membership).
So, what am I doing wrong?
My steps:
1. I load my online game/server
2. I log in
3. my son turns on his controller to join
4. (at this point it asks him for a profile which he chooses but can't join for some reason even tho it says "HDD" etc)
* changed xbox HD level from 1080i to 1080p <-- doubt this helped
* start minecraft with both controllers on <-- probably helped
* load first controller with Gold membership
* second controller log on as profile "Guest" <-- guest seemed to work when loading game instead of joining a game
* both people hit "A" when the controller screen pop up before game loads.

your game is probably set to online. change it to an offline or local game and it should work. if all else fails sign out of xbox live
