I hope I'm posting this in the right spot because I just joined the forum today. I apologize if this thread is under the wrong header.
So my friend and I started a new map about five months ago and everything has been going smoothly until now. About a week ago I decided to go explore a certain portion of the map to go collect wood. However, I noticed that a huge chunk was missing. Most of the time this is normal because the map was started by my friend and my wifi isn't always the best. Usually I can walk into the unloaded area and in a few seconds the chunk will load. This time, when I attempted to enter the area of the map where it hadn't loaded, I fell and my minecraft avatar proceeded to fall over and over again. It took my friend, pushing me little by little, to finally get me out of the unloaded area and to stop me from falling. We exited and reloaded the map countless times, but nothing worked. Now weeks later, it still hasn't loaded. It's still the same chunk, a perfect square, in the same area. I still get glitched every time I walk into that area. I just want to know what I can do. The unloaded chunk runs right through a major cave system and we think the stronghold might be there. Can you not find the stronghold in multiplayer? Is that why it's not loading? I just wanted to see if anyone knew what the issue was and or how I can fix it. I've already tried logging in and out, restarting my wifi, and waiting for the chunk to load. Nothing works. I'd really appreciate it if someone could tell me what's going on. Thanks!
This has been a problem for a few updates now.
These "death chunks" as I deem them are pretty much just that--one way in...no way out.
All you can do is avoid them and hope they'll eventually fix themselves. I've seen a few online, and they seem to come and go as they please with no apparent way of fixing them.
Ok, thank you! It's kind of upsetting that there's no solution, but at least I know this isn't an issue that only happened to me. Luckily yesterday we found the stronghold! It was near the "death chunk" but not directly under it.
Yeah, they mostly, if not only, occur over multiplayer whether you have bad WiFi or not. They're just chunks that wanna troll us and be mischevious. I had one that fixed when I updated my game though. Maybe you could backup your worlds to external storage, uninstall title update, or even the whole game, and download the update again.

To answer another one of your questions you can throw eyes of ender and follow them and they'll eventually stop above the stronghold.
