So I have been spending the last few minecraft game hours building in the nether. storage rooms, blaze traps, stuff like that. and I started wondering what did zombie pigmen do to get banished to the underworld? does anyone know?
They could have been the pigman in the over world of the past. They had a civilization, and then all ventured into the nether sealing their fate. Now they are the remnants of the past wandering for eternity...
Not the best I could come up with but for me that is enough....:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
They all became too demanding, and evil for the Overworld. They demanded more money, fame, and slaves. Notch said no to their demands. Feeling sorry for his pitiful pig-people, Notch gave them a new sentient race of beings to converse with, the Testificates!
This however didn't please the pig-people. They started anti-Notch churches, burned totems that were once dedicated to Notch, slaughtered and enslaved the new beings. Notch was not happy with the cruelty of the creatures he has made, so a war was fought to wipe them out, so their evil would not spread!
The Pig-people made fortresses to strategize against Notch. As they made plans, Notch created monsters. One unique monster turned the tide against the ruthless pig-people, the Creepers.
In the last days of the war, the Pig-people could find no way to save their hides. So they tried building a portal to a strange realm. One beyond Notch himself! The ones who went through this star filled portal never came back though. When some passed through to test it, squeals of pain could be heard. They shut down the portals and destroyed some of the strange 'eye things' powering them.
The pig-people still tried to fight Notch, but to no avail. The couple million surviving surrendered. Notch decided they did not deserve mercy. He created a place of molten rock and fire, and casted them down into this new realm. He named it the Nether. Over time the Nether started to turn these once dominant pig-people into twisted monsters.
Some of them still think, they regret their decision. Now they beg for mercy, pleading ever so for mercy again. Notch heard the cries of these pigs, so he granted the next dominant race a way to enter this place. Now it is up to us, the miners and crafters to help these things. We decide to make life better for them, or to slay them in hopes that their souls depart that place.
Notch decides what to do with the souls. People say that the souls are granted a similar form to the once humanoid figure, hence why we have pigs. When a regular pig dies (or regular by our human standard), they are greeted in the skies by a higher entity, higher than Notch himself.
Long story short: They were very evil, Notch had a war with them. They were banished just incase. Notch being forgiving, he decided to let us entry into the Nether to help them. Because now, they are very sorry.
