Edit: Just had a look at the Wiki - "Jack o'Lanterns can be used for a slime farm to light up the room, as they are opaque blocks which mobs can spawn on." (http://minecraft.gam.../Jack_o'Lantern)
Huh... that's weird... I thought for sure that they would be considered 'transparent' due to their nature.

Me too. I only tried it as someone else suggested it to me. Logically though, i suppose a pumpkin is opaque, therefore...
To me that's one of the interesting things about MC, figuring out the logic and mechanics and exploiting certain attributes. Hats off to the people that figure out all this stuff which is ultimately a by product of coding, and not always intended by the programmers.

Logically, stairs, slabs, and glowstone should be opaque too, but they aren't.
I think I also read somewhere that glowstone will become an opaque block in future updates, but that may have been for PC? Not sure, and I can't remember where I read that so take with a pinch of salt.
