I know that the info I am looking for is already posted somewhere in these forums, but if you have ever tried to navigate the internet, let alone these forums, on your xbox 360, then you understand why I am asking again. the xbox 360 is not good for web browsing. it is slow as sin an often just resets in the middle of posting.
I have used the chunk finder app. but I cant remember what levels slimes can be found at. can they be found at any level, or just below a certain level? if build my slime farm at level 40, will it work, or do I have to go deeper?
"Slimes are found in the lowest 40 layers (0 through 39) of certain chunks on the xBox 360"
From: MC Wiki: Slimes
I'd go at least 1 or 2 lower than 'at' 40, and maybe make multiple floors (with 3 blocks headroom), within your slime chunk, all the way down to bedrock.
Or you could do like I did. Clear out the entire chunk from bedrock to 40. I got lots of resources in the process and I get a buttload of slimes.
I wonder which way would be more efficient for generating slimes... does the game require a nearby surface area when slimes are spawned in a specific coordinate, or does it just spawn them at the next nearest available floor space? If the latter, then you method would be definitely more efficient, but if the former, and a nearby surface IS required, then having multiple floors would be ultimately be better in that area. and if your floors are only 1 block thick, you can still get the same amount of the more rare resources and just fill in the gaps with some of your excess cobblestone.
Slimes need an opaque block (with at least 2 non opaque blocks above it) to spawn on. The more opaque blocks you have that meet the slime spawn requirements the more slimes you can (potentially) spawn.
To get the maximum potential out of a slime farm I suggest hollowing out several rooms (one below the other) within the chunk to create as many spawnable spots as possible. If you don't need room for water canals/escalators you can keep your rooms at 3 tall with only 1 layer between each level. This means you can hollow out levels 37, 38 and 39 for your top floor, 33,34 and 35 for the room below, 29, 30 and 31 for the one below that and so on.
I highly suggest fully planning out your slime farm before you start digging. I dug out and built my slime farm 3 times, I had to redo it twice because I forgot to factor in the room I needed to make water escalators for the slimes.
I used the slime finder app for my seed and mined this out......even before i'd finished mining it out, a baby slime appeared. Then nothing, When I went back to an area nearby which apparently isn't a slime chunk, there were a couple of slimes lurking about. Then I went back to the slime chunk and one did finally appear. Can anyone see any obvious issues with this design?

No egregious flaws. I'd make it bigger, though. Somewhere around 50x50... looks like yours is 20x20, give or take. You did right by using jack-o-lanterns.
My slime farm is built one layer above bedrock and is roughly 100x100. It grew out of my diamond mine when I realized slimes were spawning in the tunnels. It was basically a branch mine I started at Y14 that I eventually hollowed out down to bedrock. Time-consuming, but it kills two birds... I ended up with several stacks of diamonds and loads of other goodies in the process.
Just as a refresher, how do you define the boundaries of the slime generating chunk? I have a spot in my mine that seems to be generating slimes pretty well and I want to expand it and farm it, but I am not sure how to know exactly the parameters of the chunk are.

One my best slime farms on a previous world was only 16x16. There's really no need to excavate such an huge area. In your case it looks like most of the work was already done.
Once you find the actual slime chunk and prepare that chunk it really depends on how many hostile mobs are spawning. My farm was successful because I had a mob farm on that world and I made a huge effort to light up all the caves in the area.
@ConArt70.. Your farm looks just fine. Maybe the caves in the area are spawning mobs instead of slimes in your farm.
I set the corners of the room to the corners of the chunk co-ords which was a 16x16 chunk. This was actually the same as yours Deskepticon, a diamond branch mine at Y12 which I kept hollowing out. So do slimes only spawn in the slime chunk, or sometimes in the general vicinity?

Only in the slime chunks.. but they have an odd, and simplistic AI. The seem to find a corner or wall of the slime chunk and go towards it. Often I'll find slime just walking(or bouncing ) towards a corner in my farm. So if they are not contained in the actual chunk it's likely they will leave it. Making it appear like they spawn in a larger area.
Thank you. Will do. I thought there might be an organic, in-game way of determining it.
Kinda. Basically, if you find slimes in a cave, open the area up a bit, get at least 30 blocks away and wait to see where they spawn at. Once you determined the general location, concentrate your farm there.

Its much easier to use the website though.
Agreed, but chunks boundaries are between the blocks that are at the X/Z coordinates that are evenly divisible by 16 and the blocks in the X/Z coordinates just one less than that block. (-16 to -1, 0 to 15, 16 to 31, etc.). FYI, if you wanted a mathematical way of finding it in game with a Map.
You can also try quickly placing and removing torches on a dimly lit floor, the lighting will often glitch, for just a moment, and not evenly spread around chunk borders as you do this, you should see distinct lines of different illumination levels where chunks meet.

The way they are spaced will drastically cut down on the number of viable locations that the larger slimes can spawn in.

The process I use just for making my mine does the trick fine.
Go down to level 10-15 and then just mine to your hearts content with a height of 3-4 and it's perfect.
Get your mining done... and you get to create a slime farm in the process.
My friend had better luck with the ones that turn into 16 of them or whatever when it's 4 high. So maybe 4 high would be a better bet.
I'm going buy the numbers.. because he hadn't been on MC like... not even 4 months but managed to kill 1800 slimes.. More than triple mine and I was playing the game like 1.5 years lol
Well... looks like you have glowstone in your floor, which are transparent blocks... and:
The way they are spaced will drastically cut down on the number of viable locations that the larger slimes can spawn in.
No, they are actually Jack-o-lanterns. I was curious though, with the higher platforms, I understand that slimes will happily drop off a ledge unlike other mobs?

Huh... I thought those looked funny for glowstone... anyway....Jack-o-lanterns are transparent blocks as well...same issue.

Hmm, I thought I read somewhere that they were fine to use, as long as it isn't glowstone. I'll look into that. Oddly, I seem to be getting slime spawning in a big room I hollowed out nearby, and I have checked the coords and it definitely isn't shown as a slime chunk. What i'll probably end up doing is join the two rooms together and make a huge slime farm. I don't even need one really, I don't tend to do much with slime and sticky pistons but I could always use it to make lava cream I suppose!
Edit: Just had a look at the Wiki - "Jack o'Lanterns can be used for a slime farm to light up the room, as they are opaque blocks which mobs can spawn on." (http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Jack_o'Lantern)

4 is unnecessary. 3 high will spawn the exact same amount.
