That height doesn't really count. Empty blocks like air do take up memory but it is nearly non existent compared to actual blocks. Hence why they were able to double the height. Ever think Minecraft lags because the Xbox 360 only has 512Mb of RAM? Last time I played on the PC and limited Minecraft to 512Mb of Ram, it crashed telling me it ran out of memory.
And Minecraft wouldn't lag because Xbox Live sucks. It would lag because your internet sucks.

My internet is pretty good. I can run two XBoxes both playing BF3 in the same game online, while my GF is streaming videos, not counting the numerous devices logged into the internet, all with out lag. I can host 8 people on my map without personally experiencing lag, but everybody else on the map has lag issues (chunks not loading, blocks not placing, etc).
Now this thread wasn't created to complain about the problem, but instead poke fun at it and get somewhat of a list of the issues that create it.
Now I do agree with you that one of the biggest problems is the amount of, or lack of, RAM with the console. And while it is one of the biggest causes of lag, there is quite a few features of the game that also contribute to it. For example:
Minecraft lags because of too many animals.
Or
Minecraft lags because of too much flowing water/lava
I haven't seen anyone post this so i might as well;
I think one of the issues are servers... it hosts off of an xbox, hence why hosts don't lag but everyone else does.
Oh crap! I just noticed I screwed up my post from a long time ago.
I was supposed to put Wireless connection.
Ethernet cable is suppose to be the good connection method
the most common causes of lag in-game are things that cause the CPU to handle separately:
too many MOBs
too many flowing water blocks
too much redstone circuitry/pistons
Each of these require extra computation, beyond the direct rendering of the world's blocks.
What other reasons do you know of that cause Minecraft to lag? And not bs reasons like "because XBox live sucks".
I run one, made the switch from Wifi awhile ago. Minecraft still lags though, especially on maps with a lot built.
But back on topic (think of this like, "you know your a redneck when...").
Minecraft lags because light updates.

It's horrible.
how can it be that low?

Yeah I'm not too sure, he live relatively close to me as well so I have no idea what the problem is or how to fix it.
If there charging 500$ for that piece of crap it better have 6GB RAM
Well it doesnt bother me cause im switching to PC
