Sorry if this is a dumb question I've been off minecraft for a while. what happens when we get an update with new items/blocks? Do we have to update the TPs too or just have blank textures?
I think all the "future" textures are already in there, which can be seen by transmuting Sandstone into Chiseled and the texture example picture shows things such as Command Blocks, too.

This is one of the best questions I've ever seen on here. Sure things like future textures for blocks that come in later updates, a la chiseled sandstone, are already in the game. However, what if they release DLC or add something to the game that isn't from the PC version and isn't preloaded into the game? Would we have to redownload our texture pack to get a newer version like on the PC or would they just push the new textures into a title update for the actual game itself?
This is an interesting question. I was curious, and when someone mentioned Chiseled Sandstone I thought we could answer one small part of the question ourselves. I went into creative and built a block i.d changer. I can confirm that unique textures for Chiseled Sandstone and Smooth Sandstone are in the Natural texture pack. Different from vanilla textures. For chiseled the creeper face is in a different place than vanilla, smooth resembles stone bricks with the Natural texture pack's sandstone color.
From this I'm guessing that the TPs are 'future proofed' somewhat or perhaps there is a set of required textures. (useable in game or not..) I would like to believe that it means 4J has new blocks for us in the next couple of updates, but there's no way to confirm this or not.
I would assume (I know, not smart) that if there is no texture in a Texture Pack for a given BlockID, that it would use the default texture. But then would there be updates to the TPs or would we have to buy a new one?
