I thought they only growl if another player hits you. Basically means they are waiting to see that player and attack. Have had this before where accidentally hit someone and that player tried to stop their dogs but they just continued to growl the whole time. Otherwise they just bark.

dogs are sooo anoying. every time i go on my worlds my sister has been on and got aload of dogs. i finally get them all to sit, walk outside, get shot by a skeleton and end up surrounded in a tidal wave of dogs!
When a player hits the dog's owner, it growls if it's sitting down until that player gets close to the dog. The dog will then jump at the player attacking it.
Before the bug fix my wolves were actually going nuts and growling for no reason/attacking ME even after being tamed, and disappearing randomly. Seriously weird stuff. So this is minimal.
I was once on a hardcore world with one wolf. I had 1 heart and so the wolf killed the spider that was going to kill me 5 seconds later another spider kills me ;(

actually they still growl uncontrollably even after the thing that hits you is dead. also they suck at attacking things. they miss all the time. and my dogs still disappear. they were great before the jungle update now they are just garbage. I end up killing then tho because of the constant growling. the other poster was right. easy xp

You mute your tv and that is about it! Plus, they help you in battle against monsters, so don't they say they suck. I bet your dog probably saved your life a couple of times!

If you spread the dogs out and have them sit only the ones within a small radius will help when you are attacked. Dogs are very useful in hunting but they are awesome at collecting ender pearls. I usually use 4 dogs against endermen. The dogs will keep biting the endermen and it prevents him from teleporting away. So you don't lose the pearls.
At least with dogs you can heal them with the "Never ending supply" of dog food happily donated by our zombie friends. But cats, there is no way of healing them except making healing potions and hitting them with gunpowder to make them splash potions. I always leave my cats at home around my house/base.
INB4 someone says "give them a fish, fish heals them up" no it doesn't. All it does is put them into love mode.
