So I built a wall around the only village in my current world, and am building a tower on the edge. I'm looking forward to fighting off a few zombie sieges. But night after night, nothing but peace in the little hamlet.
So I noticed from some wikis that you need a certain number of villagers to make this happen. I have 7-8 right now, so I figured I need 5 or so more.
So I started a big construction project. Started building a bunch of small buildings, multi-tiered duplexes. All within a stone's throw of the well.
Well, the villagers seem to be checking it out... (oy, the doors opening and closing CONSTANTLY).... but I notice that none of them are getting in the mood to have some chill'un. No hearts.
What, do I have to put on some Barry White? What's it gonna take to get some action in my village and get it populated?
All villagers are the same currently. Try locking 4 in a single house and then add a bunch of doors to the other houses.
Edit: When on my 24/7 server I get the most villagers when no one is on for several hours and my avatar is at least 130 blocks in the sky away from anything. My guess is that since nothing is spawning while the server is on but no people are at ground level that more villagers breed.
The hearts won't appear, as I believe that is something left out by accident. Just a guess with that. I personally consider that a bug and have mentioned it.
As for getting them to breed, just make sure the ratio of doors is 3 to 1 villager. Most naturally generated towns do not have enough doors to support the town in the first place. I was lucky with the update, since I remodeled my town before the update and when it hit I got at least 5 in one town, being 1 golem spawned, and 8 or so in the other to end up with 2 golems.
If you have an iron golem in town, that is roughly about when the siege might happen I think. Don't really know since my couple of towns are well lit and fortified from the creatures of the night; 99.98% of the time.
make sure first if you have enough doors for the amount of villagers currently, and then add accordingly.:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
One more thing you have to keep in mind is that you cant have the breeding tower more than 32 blocks away from the center of town.
The center of town is determind by the average of the houses and their distance. If your tower is off to the side of the area you laid out it might be outside of that radius.
I ran into this problem before. I didnt want my breeding tower close so villagers wouldnt move in. I had to move it closer and when my village got to about 50 they stared living there. I had about 16 building for them, but about 20 of them want to live there.
I've had a siege happen on the very first night of the game when I took refuge in a village that had 2 large houses, a blacksmith, and 3 of the small houses (a probably at least one of those had no door). I wasn't on hard, so the zombies couldn't actually break the door in, but I did lose 1 of the initial villagers who failed to go inside. I think the sieges can happen on any random night regardless of whether or not the village is large or small or has a golem or not.
If you don't have a situation where an infinite breeding cell gets set up, the ratio for getting villagers to breed is 3 doors for each villager, counted from the village center (which is not necessarily the well, but rather a central point averaged based on the locations of all the various doors).
Thanks for the village theory link. I was having a massive population explosion and didn't know why. My village spawned in a hilly area so that explains it completely.
Now to figure out which houses are too high or low and start some demoliton.
Upup... thanks for that link. I tried that little trick of the underground houses and suddenly the stork visited my village with a bunch of bundles.
It's a nifty trick, all... see the link above for the full detail, but here's a quick rundown of how to add tons of houses without actually adding any clutter to the village.
Find the center house.
Dig a trench all around the house, about 5 deep.
Dig out 2-high cells all around.
Place doors over the cells.
Get out of the trench and place glass blocks all around the trench tops.
Viola! You now have 6-12 new houses, and there's nothing cluttering up your village, only a glass sidewalk around one house.
Note that the trench tops cannot have any obstructions to sunlight. The game calls it a house if the sun shines on one side of the door and the other side has a roof.
You need to put two villagers in a house with a jukebox and put stal music disk on. If you put more than one villager in the house you need to play Where are we now. Trust me, I have a huge collection of, uhm, villagers.

There is a tutorial at Chunkbase.com - http://chunkbase.com...theory/villages
It is the average distance between all your houses(The distance between house coordinates divided by the number of houses), so it is not.
I hope that helps.
