I feel like your nephew, never knowing what minecraft really was. My friends kept telling me to get the game (Xbox) but I always avoided it. Eventually I bought it when I was bored and like it!
My first world I ever created was back in the alpha/beta minecraft, I heard something briefly about it and just checked it out since it was free back then. I spawned in the air about 30 blocks from the ground, on a little floating island, it has a huge cobblestone/mossy cobblestone cube, when I finally dug my way into it using my hand, I saw a little cube with a pig inside of it, was really confused. I looked it up and figured out what to do with all that, so I grabbed a saddle, some other stuff, and a golden apple from the two chest, turned on easy mode, and got shot off the island falling to my death. I didn't play the game for a few months after that. lol.

Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.
VERY similar story about my nephew. I showed him the PC version, and he basically gave me the "yeah right" face. I said, "Just try the classic version" (the one that's on the website, older version you can play for free in your browser), he did and seemed less than interested.
Jump ahead 2 weeks, and he bought the full version and was hosting a server playing death matches with his friends online. (He mostly plays 1st person shooters too). Damn kids these days ...

i had been recommending the craft to one of my friends who was asking for a new game to play. (he only plays fifa)
he was hesitant for a few months due to the usual "too blocky, whats the point" reasons but finally got it a couple weeks ago.

When Minecraft first came out for PC I only cared about shooters, such as Gears, CoD, Halo etc... I made fun of it whenever the topic was brought up, or I saw any forum posts about it. My attitude on games from 2009-2010 drastically changed in 2011 after I moved. Then about 6 months before the game came out on consoles my brother started playing Castle Miner Z on his Xbox. I would walk past his room while he was playing it and sometimes it would look cool. The majority of the time it was just him screwing around, which made the game look boring.
The day the game came out my friends were at school (can't remember why I wasn't) so I downloaded the trial as a joke. I ended up playing around in the tutorial mode and after an hour I stopped. I said to myself, this game is pretty awesome. I sent a text to my friend about it and told him that he should try it. He had about the same feelings on the game as I had previously. When he got home from school he tried it, then out of impulse buy we both got it. My brother watched us play it and ended up buying it too. I still have a save of our first world and it brings back so many memories. Sadly after only playing in the world for about 4 days I got nether bugged (walking on the ceiling of the nether). I've been playing it on and off for over a year now and don't regret it one bit. Probably one of my best $20 investments.
my next door neighbor plays a ps3 and had no idea what minecraft was, so i let him borrow my xbox just for a few days to play it...i did not see him for about a month after.
first i thought what is this stupid game then a long time later it came for xbox and i said i will NEVER get it. everyone in my frindlist was playing minecraft so i downloaded the demo and played the tutorial then i got a party invitation and a friend said i can play with you when you buy the game and i was like its not that stupid and there are no other games out yet that are fun so i said ok and then after i downloaded it he went playing CoD and i was p*ssed so i played alone and learned how this crazy game works and now it got 12 updates and its getting more fun everytime you play and i frickin' love what you can do with redstone
... and that's gotta be the longest run-on sentence I've read in a long time.
I remember watching my son play on PC for a while and asking him, "What's the point of the game? What do you DO?" He convinced me to give it a go, and I spent an entire day while he was at school making a huge maze. He got home, completed the maze in three seconds (I ended up cheating because I couldn't find my way out) and then showed me how to generate a maze (it had taken me five or six hours to build one). I built a few houses/castles in creative mode but still couldn't really work out what I was meant to be doing. I gave up on MC after a couple of weeks until we got an xbox. It's one of my favourite games now and now it's me trying to explain the "point" of it to other people.
I was a skeptic for the longest time... Ever since it came out on computer, my little brother and my nephews have been trying to convince me to play MC with them. I saw it, and said I wouldn't be caught dead playing a stupid game like that.
Fast-forward a couple years; I saw my stepson playing it on the xbox, he gives me the controller and convinces me to give it a try... I played for about 15 minutes, then went and bought it myself. Now I'm hooked. I also have managed to get my wife hooked. :-P
I was skeptic. I saw Whiteboy do a video back in the 1.7 days of minecraft so I guess I got in late. I found out about the game only in 2011. I thought it looked stupid, the graphics all blocky and the pixels everywhere. But then I started seeing it more and more so I decided I should try. I asked my buddy about it and he sent me a "Cracked version" (let me state I didn't know you had to pay for it..) and I had too much fun. I played all night (Until My computer crashed... Optimization is key guys.. I had no Idea about PC gaming back then.) Then I found out they were making an Xbox version so I did as much research as I could. I watched all the episodes of Syndicates "The Minecraft Project" series on youtube. I became obsessed over wanting to play because all the updates that I watched happen were so awesome. Then I finally got the game and was hermiting it forever. I still do, I've spent so many hours on minecraft that if I saw the number I'd probably wonder what my life has come to. I love this game now, for anyone ever skeptical they need to just play the game long enough to see what it has to offer.
I always thought it looked stupid and was a game for losers. Then, it came out on Xbox. Bought it instantly. Didn't even download the trial. Kind of impulsive, but, by far, the best of my impulsive purchases. I then proceeded to convince about 15 of my friends to buy it as well
"Nah... it looks all blocky and stupid".
Me: "Buddy, you gotta get minecraft. It's only like $20"
Him: "No, really, I'm ok with it".
My nephew was strictly a FPS player, btw.
So I put the points on his account so he could get it... showed it to him online...
4 days later, I ran into him on Xbox Live.
I said, "Hey, how's it going? Likin' da Minecraft?"
The first words out of his mouth were, (and I couldn't make this up)...
"Dude, what did you do to me?"
So, anyone have any similar stories?
but its a long story
Inb4 Redstone.
Stay fluffy~

Its difficult to relay why I enjoy playing it. It does sound a bit crap when you describe it out loud..
Ive been playing for 2 years now btw.
