Say my buddy doesn't have the Mash Up Pack and I'm playing on his world. How can I use my Mash-Up Pack? I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it. I'm apparently blind because it's probably very easy and right in my face.
I remember wondering the same thing just a while ago, and I'm gonna have to agree. I don't think you can.
I think this calls for an option to select what texture pack you use when on someone else's world. And if the host is using a different one, then it'll ask if you want to switch.
You mean use the pack while he has default?
I don't think this is possible, at least that I know of.
Then this is the first time that I do not agree with what 4J has done.
Unless there is some technical reason like the 360 not being powerful enough or something, I see no reason why we cannot use two different packs on a world. I really, really hope this is the case for Texture Packs.
Your friend can't see any of the textures in a pack he doesn't have loaded up into the game. If each of you is allowed to have a different set of textures loaded up, what you see and what he sees will be totally different as you're playing together. You may say "so what?" But I'm guessing this is the policy issue right here. I can see 4J deciding that it would be too confusing for many players, and it's best to disallow it entirely.
Edit: And then there's the music issue. This may actually be the greater tech barrier. Just a guess.

Thus rendering the point of texture packs and mash-up packs completely pointless...
I never had a problem playing on a PC Server where nearly everyone of the 200 people used different texture packs.

I'm thinking it has to do with how Live uses a host's Xbox like a server rather than there actually being servers. It may lag everything right out if the host and people playing in the world are using different mash-up add-ons to the default base textures. The trial pack is available to anyone for free so they can join in a game hosted by someone else using a mash-up and see the same mashup they do... and it is the host who is the only one saving the world anyways (so all the work of the guests would get saved even if they didn't have the full version). Since I can't play online right now again, I just can't test if the joining player will just automatically see the same mash-up as the host if they have the trial on their system and see the default texture if they don't.
I play another block game and you can change the text pack in game. Regardless of what the host is doing. Perhaps it has something to do with the mashed pack? It does have that purdy MC/ME3 title screen.

I believe it was stated that If you host a map and paid for the mash-up pack, then anyone could use the trial version of the mash-up pack to see what you're seeing. I never read anything in regards to using a mash-up pack on your end when the host uses default. The only way to even select a texture pack is when loading up your own world.

Yes, texture packs might work a little differently when they come out. One thing the TPs don't have are the massive sound files to deal with, which might mean that the system, through the beast that Live is, can handle multiple TPs but not multiple mash-ups.
For TPs I'd think that there would only be block IDs and locations transferred between the host and client consoles. Sound files may be a little different....
Probably doable, but maybe a conscience decision by 4J to not allow on mash-ups.
Its possible TPs will be different, but I'd assume they'll be selected in the same UI as the mash-up packs. My guess is that, similar to changing difficulty settings in-game, TPs will be able to be selected at load up, and stay that way until exit. And like difficulty settings, that would be dictated by the host.

True, but as has been pointed out many times already, the texture change with this mash-up completely changes things, to the point of being unrecognizable. It's not the case of blocks remaining the same while being styled differently.
Technical need, policy decision--I don't know. It is what it is, I guess. I wouldn't want to play with someone who can't understand what I'm doing because it looks so different. I'd tell them to load up the trial pack first.
One more thought: Pure texture packs should allow what you want. Hopefully they will. Mash-ups can change more than just the look of things, so the decision gets more dicey.
Or can you even do it at all...?

Stay fluffy~
