Im just finishing my basic super tree. Inside is a spiral stair case that is about 150 blocks up to the main jump (exact height later) and in the center is a 3x3 pool thats 2 deep. My first, and second jump into the pool killed me. Is this new? This along with the new spontanious creating of water source blocks, starting to get annoyed.
My pool is now 3x3 and 4 deep and slower to get out.
Side note, anyone able to help me snap some pics of my build? Quite proud of this build and want to show it off. 13x13 round tree than starts somewhere around 70 to 230. All survival!!
2 Deep water doesn't protect you from high jumps. This has been on the game since day 1.
The water must be lower than 2 Deep in order to take no damage from the fall
I believe if it is 3 deep you will always live, no matter how high you are. However I just fell from 256 to 4 into a 2 high pool and lived, so it's possible you could be hitting the edges.
From what I understand, each block of water increases the height you can fall from by 16 blocks. Normally, if you fall 4 blocks, you take half a heart of damage. With a 1-deep pool, you could fall 20 blocks and take half a heart of damage. With a 2-deep pool, that would be 36. 3-block deep guarantees survival.
This may not be the case, though, as I tested this once (I think it was TU8 when I did it) and found that:
1-deep pools do not reduce damage
2-deep pools completely negate damage until somewhere around 46 blocks (if I remember correctly), after which, it's instant death
3-deep pools act normally and completely negate all fall damage
It was changed in PC version 1.4.4 so you don't take fall damage if you land in any amount of water. If that's what the OP was referring to, then we aren't to that version yet and we probably won't be for a while.
There are several work arounds. If you have a 2 x 1 vertical shaft that you fall into you can place some ladders (or vines) at the bottom that will catch you and slow you down enough to take no damage and you don't have to get out of water. You can use signs or ladders to place blocks of water above the fall platform and passing through the water on your way down will slow you and you still land on solid ground. You can have a piston open a water fall for a couple of seconds. You then close the piston and jump into the water. You then ride the water down as it dissipates so at the bottom a couple of seconds later there is no water. Use a minecart ride to drop you etc.
I have always used 1-deep water drops and survived.
I suspend it 3 or 4 blocks above the ground with a sign in survival, or by melting ice in creative.
Also, if 3-deep is "slow," you have suction created. Place more water sources on the middle and bottom layer of water.

I know that trick but it doesnt fit. the fall is around 100 blocks. my tree is from 105 to 227, all in survival. The water is nice and calm. its 4 deep now, just to be safe. but its slow to get out sometimes. Others its just fine.
Related note, what the best way to trim hard to reach vines? Do flaming arrows starts fires? If so i could use that i guess.
