I'm playing on hard mode and I normally sleep at night to speed up the game. I just started my new world on TU 12 so I haven't went mining. If I go mining and I work through the night will zombies spawn on the surface killing all my villagers?
They could, if your village is within the area around you in which mobs spawn (about 144 blocks). That is, if you go mining more than 144 blocks away from the village and don't accidentally wind up under it while following a cave), your villagers should be absolutely safe. If you're farther away that 32 blocks, the mobs all stop moving around, so there wouldn't be much danger to them that way either. Another thing you can do is ensure that the inside of the houses are well lit up and place blocks in front of the doorways so that zombies can break them down (if you're playing on hard mode).
Villagers cannot open an iron door unless you set it up to be activated by a pressure plate.
Which means zombies can open iron doors if villagers can. (that way at least)
Man 144 blocks. Even if i'm down on y=13 their lunch meat.
I had to run off quick and originally forgot to mention... The mobs spawn but don't move around if you're between 32 and 144 blocks, so the villagers wouldn't be in danger anyways until you get back within that 32-block radius. Also, the zombies can only break down the doors on hard mode, so you don't even really need to block them off at all if you're playing on easy or normal.
well, I started mining around level 14 and my village is around 60's. But when I came up in the morning there was a skeleton outside my house. One door was broken. And all 3 villagers were eaten.
I can only think of two possible things that may of happened.
1. I came up when zombies could still be out from the night before
2. As I was mining down I stayed within 32 blocks too long. I didn't think that happened but I did fight a skeleton around that point.
Neither were it. I made sure to stay 32 beneath until midday and when I came up 2 or 5 villagers were gone. Most doors gone. The last 3 disappeared over time before I ever went back to mining. I had replaced the doors too
My theory is that it doesn't matter where the player is, as the player has nothing to do with the zombies attacking the villagers. If a zombie spawns within 32 blocks of a villager, they would lock on to that villager, therefore moving and attacking, even if the player is 100 blocks away. Two ways I can think of to stop zombies from spawning and attacking villagers - be at least 144 blocks away from villagers so zombies won't spawn near them or go to bed as soon as night starts so nothing gets a chance to spawn.
Edit: According to minecraft wiki, zombies can actually zone in on a player or villager from 66 blocks away as long as nothing is in their way. If this and my theory are both right, you would need to be at least 210 blocks away from villagers to keep them safe - 144 blocks to cover the spawn area and a further 66 blocks in case a zombie happened to spawn right at the edge of the spawn area.
Also, can villagers open metal doors?
