I've noticed that when my kids play they refuse to use a sword and just try to beat monsters, animals, and villagers with what ever is in there hands. Destroying things they built in the process! So I'm curious if others prefer this method or has specific weapons!
For me it's mostly sword since sometimes I'm too lazy to get string for bows so normally my first bow is around the time after I get iron. But when I do have a bow, I can snipe mobs or sometimes even players. For enchantment on a bow, I hope for Power, Infinity, and Flame.
I use a sword up until I get a nice supply of arrows for my bow. Once I make a chicken farm for feathers, I ditch the sword. I prefer staying a distance away, especially for creepers.

I use what I have on me, which is generally specific to what the world is.
I almost always have a sword equipped and usually a bow, but in addition, I tend to carry both Lava Buckets and Flint and Steel along with them in a PvP-enabled world.
Bow for sniping (I've noticed that no matter the platform or the world, I always build sniper nests around my house ASAP!) and sword for close-up whacking. I actually have several swords (one with sharpness and knockback for non-undead, one with smite and knockback for zombies, and one with smite but no knockback for skeletons, which you don't want to gain range), and of course looting on all of them.
Also a skeleton farm that gives me all the exp I want, just whack the skells in the ankles after the water carries them to the killing pit. Yeah, I'm lazy. And if I just want their drops, I open the sunlight shutter over the pit and go afk until I have all the drops I want.

OT: I would prefer bows, but since I don't like to spend my time killing skeletons and spiders, I normal use swords. Or fire.

I'm not "worried". I just think its funny. Watermelon....I knew I was forgetting a weapon.
I will say this about sniping. I had built two buildings about 20 -40 blocks away and at a diagonal. I'm at the top of the taller building and my son sees a creeper and the roof of the other building. So I get my bow out...Aim...Adjust for gravity....Two shots, both hits. I looked at him. I'm Robin Hood!
Sword. Most of the time Iron, unless I have the diamonds to spair. Even if I could get an enchanted bow, I still prefer swords since they aren't resource drains when it comes to arrows, unless you have Infinity
