I can't figure out this villager thing and zombie sieges. We had a fairly large village populated with villagers where we set up camp. After about 2-3 nights, all the villagers were gone.
I know there are zombie sieges, but how do we maintaina population of villagers?
We tried to bring in a couple of villagers from a nearby village (using minecarts) and let them loose in the village but they were gone by morning as well. We live in a ghost town.
What do we need to do to repopulate?
Edit: Just to add, we are on Easy mode so zombies can't break down doors.
I am noticing this too. I found another village tonight, playing on normal survivor mode. At night there were about seven villagers, they all went indoors when it started getting dark, but about three or four minutes later, they went back outside (I watched the whole thing from a tall tower nearby!). Zombies came. By morning, there was only one villager left.

I play hard mode and that happened to me too. I checked my other town and it seemed ok, so I guess Im moving there. I did protect my villagers, I even had golems but every day less and less villagers. P's me off.

you cannot repopulate if no more villages.... unless you find zombie villagers(wild) and feed it golden apples...they have a 5% chance of spawning.... Also in other to protect your villagers you better move it into your base.ALso you shoudl't let them lose....
First off, are the villages even walled off? Using fences or a 2 block dirt wall helps keep the zombies out and the villagers in. Also, villagers breed according to the amount of doors in the village. It's 35% or 7/20 villager/door ratio.
Click here for the wiki link and more specific details on villager breeding.
I've noticed my villagers going back out into the night as well. Silly villagers. I'd let them all die but I expect to be trading with them in the next update so I walled everything off, lit the entire area and built about 15 additional "houses" (doors) and have baby villagers. No sieges yet but I have two villagers quarantined with no way out (or in) so they will always be safe and can repopulate if everyone else gets zombyfied.
All I can say is that those villages that are disappearing might not be lit up enough. I mean the default housing for villagers are not always by default having enough light. Especially the small houses and those L-shape interior housing. The only ones that are lit up are those guard tower ones, and butchers... The rest you would need to go around with torches to light up.
Also like what others have mentioned, having a wall around the village and lighting everything within the wall up practically saves them from an onslaught. It is not just the outside of the houses that you need to keep an eye on, but also the inside. During a zombie seige the zombies will spawn in "any" dark areas, including the ones inside the housing. From the sound of it since they go in at dark, and then come out a few seconds later could mean a zombie spawned inside and they were trying to get away from them.
That is the way I see it. If I am wrong, then I have no idea. You can repopulate a village via minecart as you been doing but make sure the village is actually safe for them to live in.
Having them in your main base could be another way to keep at least two alive as well. Just be warned of the many zombies that could be attracted to such a desert. There are many ways to go about this, it just means you might have to rethink what you are doing in order to keep them safe. Watch out for holes in the ground that could cause them fall damage, as those would kill them off before the zombies, as they do love walking around as much as playing with the doors.:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.

This sucks if they are going back outside during the night. Hopefully they fix this soon or I won't have any villagers left in other towns to draw on. I'lll have to try to throw a few in dungeon for safe keeping.
I have 3 Iron golems, 1 naturally spawned Iron golem, 25 houses, and a lot of villagers. The Iron golems just wreck every thing. I got so many villagers from importing them from other villagers. Even if they do die, my many doored Pub House is where they mate.
Also a good tactic to protect villagers is to use a combination of snow golems and iron golems. The snow golems do no damage but they knock zombies back. So having a few in front of houses will hopefully keep zombies away from the doors, plus if you have iron golems they will help in killing the zomÂes. I use this setup and don't even have my village walled off and this keeps most my villagers alive. A few die only because they venture off in search of a door in the wilderness when night comes it seems....stupid villagers there aren't any doors out there...
The reason I haven't walled off my village yet is because I'm in the process of adding a ton of houses and don't want the hassle of messing with a wall every time I extend the village one way or the other.
We fenced in the villages and placed torches everywhere (including roofs) and we have an overpopulation problem. 150+ villagers with all those iron golems. everyday we have to slaughter most to keep the server from lagging. We play hard survival but the zombie sieges do not seem overpowered at all. Maybe a dozen zombies at once in groups of 3 or 4. If I'm around I can easily dispatch the zombies without iron golem help. We also are now leaving all the gates (about 20 per village) open to encourage zombies to kill villagers.

Another question about villages/villagers - did the update kind of compensate for the villagers being killed by putting in a lot more villages and villagers in the newly made worlds? Before the update, I would explore an entire map and find one, maybe two villages tops. I have started one new world since the update, explored just over half the world and already found three separate villages. In older worlds my villages seemed to be a lot smaller than what I have found in my new world, too. More houses spread out over a larger area. Has anyone else noticed this or have I just found an unusual world?
Well we have walled off most of the village and the place is lit up. We are going to try bringing in villagers from nearby towns and see if they will repopulate. Obviously some of you are fine with 150+ villagers.
I just need to figure out the whole breeding thing I guess. It seems we have enough houses and doors to support an average village so far. I would love enough villagers for them to make an iron golem. The good news is, we found a pumpkin seed last night in a chest so we should be able to make our own golems soon.

That is something I wouldn't mind knowing myself. How the mechanics of villager breeding work on the xbox version work. Is it the same as pc or are the restrictions lowered. I am not talking about max limit I am refering to how many doors = 1 villager. Basically on the pc it is 3 doors per 1 villager. whom is to say it is not lower than that. I would have to do a bit of testing myself.
On my old world in which I have a elaborate wall and built like a few buildings from scratch, I actually ended up with 1 golem. That is the other thing I wouldn't mind knowing is how many on the xbox version make 1 golem appear. It is 30 on the pc far as I know.
for a door to count there has to be more air blocks on one side of a door than the other side of the door. If there are an equal amount on both sides then it does not = a valid house. So a dirt block above the door on one side will be a valid house, although not practical for obvious reasons; ie siege, it still considered a house. So a building with a 1 block lip with still count as a house, since it is only 1 block compared to 2+ on the other side of the door. This is basically to tell which side is considered the outside and which side is the inside.
Inside is the side of the door which the most non-transparent blocks, and the outside the least amount. It is all based upon natural light & the position of the door relative to it and the covered portion on the other side of the door.
That is the basics roughly, but still need to test it myself to see an exact figure. I hope I explained that right, but if all else fails you can always check the wiki, since it is a bit more elaborate than I can ever be.:D

It's definitely way different on the Xbox. I have a village with a total of 13 or 14 doors at most (including the small house I built for myself - which is the ONLY structure that has been player built so far in the entire world). Going by the 30% rule the PC has, this village should cap out at about 5 villagers; but I have had several successive days where I can easily count that many baby villagers running about. On average, I probably have twice as many villagers as doors. The zombie sieges are helping a little to keep the villager population somewhat constant, but I now do have this problem of an iron golem running about killing ME every chance he gets. Somehow I got on his bad side; and I can't seem to find a way to get back into his good books nomatter what I do.

Build a wall.
As Tamorr suggests - might be a good idea to place a few torches inside as well.
I thought that zombies can spawn during sieges even if there are walls and the the town is lit up.
