Prior to TU12 when I mined clay it came up looking like balls. Now it's coming up as cubes. I no longer am able to put them in the furnace. Well, actually I can put them in with coal, but nothing happens. No bricks, they just sit there like storage.
I feel like I'm missing something obvious. It could be a bug I suppose, but if i'm overlooking something can someone fill me in please?
Dumb question, but I have to get it out of the way: Are you sure you're mining clay and not sand? Sometimes sand in shallow water looks so similar to clay that you have to go underwater to tell for sure.
Otherwise, I'm stumped. I hope the update hasn't messed up clay.
It's probably are that you're mining sand rather than clay. The other possibility is that you've gone to using a silk touch pickaxe to mine it... which will collect the clay blocks as clay blocks. It is BTW the waste of a great pickaxe, however, because if you want clay blocks rather than bricks, you can craft the clay balls back into clay blocks using the crafting table.
Place he clay block down and use a shovel to pick it up, this should give you the clay balls to smelt into brick. I was confused by this as well until i tried it yesterday.
Thank you all. I'm a derp, I figured it was something simple. I always enchant my shovels for unbreaking and then whatever I get as well with it. And yep I was using a silk touch shovel to get clay.

Edit: You're not using a silk-touch tool are you?
that would be my guess too.
You do not need a crafting table to craft clay back into blocks. The 2x2 crafting area works just fine
