Don't use a piston elevator. Save yourself alot of grief and agony and take my advice. Piston elevators are highly unreliable unless your playing by yourself in a offline world, and even then they can easily break.
Elevators require key timings, which is nearly impossible with the server, the simple act of one users logging out and then back into the game will likely change the timings needed for your elevators, and when your start dealing with more and more users within your map, timings again will break, the more of your map that gets loaded, they...you guessed it break again.
There might be others here who will try to convince you otherwize, and after awhile you will find out that the elevator you thought was working flawlessly is broken once again for no apparent rime or reason.
Your best bet is to look at using ladders, mine carts, or stairs. If you really want some type of elevator there is a boat elevator thingy that is actually way faster then a piston elevator.

Whatever you go with...best of luck.
This. I tried making one last October and realized it will never work due to the amount of lag it creates for everyone but the host.
Ya no way a piston elevator works that high. We have tried numerous times on our city to no avail. Water elevator is what we settled on, best for space and time.
I'm. Making a minigame map, but the game is over 100 blocks in the sky. I need to make the piston elevators to get 8 people into the sky fast.
How do I make them?
As most of the others have said, piston elevators aren't probably the best choice, but it can be done. I'm kind of a sucker for them, myself The larger problem you're going to run into, is that if you want all eight people to ride it at the same time, a zipper-style elevator isn't going to work very well for you. A user named DaftasBrush built a few that used an "inchworm" technique to push a car up and down, rather like a real elevator, but the thread he posted them in has been dead for quite a while, and his builds no longer function correctly as of 1.5. You could look him up, and even check out the world, or his videos over on YouTube, but the design is really complicated, and takes quite a bit of work to get it right.
Either way, good luck!

Learn some Java before you mod, and skip over the chapter on ModLoader, straight to MinecraftForge. It's better. Trust me.
