I know this is noobish of me, but I am having trouble finding lava. I would like to find it so I can get obsidian. Any suggestions on the best way to get it?

Never thought there would be a problem of finding lava. That's like not being able to find a creeper.
More of an issue of me not having the balls to explore countless dungoens
Anyways I found some and got 6 netherrack out of it so far. Of course a creeper popped out right in front of me on my way back the first time, but I survived (barely) and plan to get more!
I have a question though -- when I poar water on the lava, it normally makes one to two obsidian before stopping and getting absorbed by the lava. Am I doing something wrong?

Pour the water on a block beside the lava so that it spreads out over the lava lake area. Then, leave the water there and place a single block (I just use dirt) for you to stand on and mine the obsidian through the water. That way, none of it will burn in the lava underneath it. When you're done mining that layer, collect your source block of water. Rinse and repeat.
