Somebody told me that the more levels you have (above 30) the greater chance you have of getting higher enchantments. I cant confirm or deny this claim, but try enchanting something with 50 levels and see what happens.
I thought it was available on gold swords on the xbox? I wanted to enchant one just for s&g as well as display.
I honestly have never tried to enchant a gold anything. In fact, I don't think I've ever bothered to even make a gold tool of any kind. If it's for display, then I think Sharpness I would look the same in the item frame as Sharpness IV (or V - which I still don't think you can get anyways). So, if you want to waste 30 XP, go ahead - knock yourself out.

Since 30 is the highest level ever offered, I don't think it matters how much more than 30 levels you have in your inventory. Try looking up an Enchantment Calculator. The odds of getting different enchantments are given there and the site does not mention anything about those odds changing if you have more than 30 levels of XP.

This is exactly what I thought, especially since the other day I enchanted a diamond sword with 38 levels and only got Knockback II. But I figured I'd throw it out there and see what others had to say.
Thanks to you and MustacheGuy for the additional input.

I got 2 grinders running. A normal one and a blaze spawner. Frankly I find xp to be a little annoying at times as it seems Im always at 30, esp when Im grinding for blaze rods. I enchant iron swords at 30 (sharpness IV and Looting III). I figured why not! I have a few stacks of gold to spare.
I found accounts of people supposedly getting it. I just was wondering if they where full of it or no.
I'm too lazy to look, but there's something with the Enchantment values and tool type that prevent all weapons from legitimately obtaining Sharpness V via enchanting.
Bane and Smite have a lower value than Sharpness and are this able to be acquired.
Efficiency V can also be obtained on Gold tools.
The only legitmate way is through combining two Sharpness IV weapons on an Anvil...which we don't have.

That was my concern and why I posted on here. I was afraid those people where full of it. Oh well, Ill throw that sword up in a display unless someone is ever able to confirm its possible.

I do remember that, in addition to the value of the enchantment, each material has an 'enchantability' (diamond has worst stat on this, gold actually has the best). This stat can increase the chances of good enchantments (if I remember, the way the numbers work is that higher enchantability reduces the 'cost' of enchantments on that item).
Anyway, intuitively it seems a gold tool being enchanted might on rare occasions give you max level enchantments you can't get on other tools (at least until they add the anvil).
Wow! Im the complete opposite... I find blaze rods to be annoying when Im grinding for XP.
Lol. I use a looting III iron sword when grinding for blaze rods, so i have more blaze rods and glowstone then I know what to do with really. Plus with the blaze rods, I can cook stone or other things and get exp too, so its a win win.
Ok, so i used some calculators to find out if sharp V can be gotten without an anvil. One calc said its a 0.2% chance, another said 0.1% both at level 30. In fact when I used http://www.minecraftenchantmentcalculator.com/ and put in sharp V on diamond sword, the exact message displayed was "Error: Sharpness V is only obtainable on a gold sword, or by repairing two Sharpness IV swords in an anvil."
So apparently it is possible. Now I feel compelled to try again.

Yea, thats what I figured you were using them for.
I've always been a little too OCD about using blaze rods since 5 of them smelt 60 items, not a full stack of 64. I throw in that 6th rod and then feel bad about those 8 potential "would-be smelted" items. Like seeing orphans with dirty faces.

Meh. I have half a double chest full of them. I dont even use coal any more. Wasting a rod is meh. I just grab a new stack every so often and refill it.
Not true, you can get efficiency V and smite V and sharpness V with gold tools, done it before and look on the the video.

Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.

Sharpness V.. pretty sure it isn't possible on a gold sword. I just hopped onto creative mode, and I must have went through over 1,000 swords on level 30 enchants. Smite and Bane V, definitely possible. I got those a lot. Not a single sharpness V, though. It's be pretty worthless, anyway. A sharpness V Gold sword would be outclassed by a sharpness III diamond sword.
Fun fact -- Smite and Bane V are also possible on Iron Swords. A smite V iron sword is a joyous thing to have.
Edit: Lookin at the enchantability values, I wonder if smite V is possible on diamonds? I'mma have to test that, too.

It is not available at all without an Anvil.
Going over 30 does nothing to increase your chances of getting enchantments.

Actually, stone does.
It goes as follows:
Stone--4
Diamond--10
Iron--14
Wood--15
Gold--22
Here's the wiki page with all that mumbo jumbo.
