These things are worthless as fences! I put some sheep in a fence made of these things, leave maybe 35 blocks away to get more supplies. Come back to find 3 sheep despawned and watched the last one walk out. Guess its back to decorative only. I thought all fences count as 1.5 blocks but I was wrong.
It's not like this information is hidden. It's something like the second line on the page on iron bars in the Wiki. There are several uses for iron bars other than mere decoration. These are also listed in the Wiki. They do make nice decorative fences and if stacked 2 high do make an effective barrier, so I have absolutely no problem with them being shown under the fence section of the crafting interface. The only thing that confuses me about the organization is why fence gates are not listed under the fence section of the crafting interface (which would potentially free up a tab for something else). Iron bars, when stacked only 1 high, just do not make good animal fences. Next time, don't assume so much.
Exactly. My chicken coop uses iron bars 2 high, plus the inside area is dug down one more block. I've had my 9 chickens almost since the release of TU11, and not one of them has escaped or despawned.
Make them two blocks high.
Like others have said they are bars not fence.
If you are gonna use two blocks high however there is better non-solid blocks that sheep can't push through.

that space is way to large for an animal pen anyway. if they can travel 20 blocks or more the game considers them free and will despawn them.
I know they are called iron bars but they are in the fence crafting set. Its natural to assume its 1.5 considering.
