I've never actually gone looking specifically for diamonds before, I tend to occasionally stumble upon them though. So, tonight my goal was to go and mine nonstop until I found some. I came home with:
610 blocks of cobblestone
197 redstone
50 coal
24 iron ore
11 dirt blocks
and...
6 diamonds!!!
Went through three iron pickaxes and I think I was down there for two whole days and one night!?! So unbelievably excited when I saw those little blue rocks though
Sorry, had to share, no one around who would understand why I am so stupidly happy!
No Matter How Long You Play Mc... Everytime You See Those Little Blue Rocks Shining ThrouGH The Darkness ,Its Always A Site For Sore Eyes! You Should Get A Fortune Pick For Your Next Ones...Maybe Instead Of 6 You Can Get 18 ..Enchantments Come In handy
I have not got around to doing enchantments yet, to be honest I wouldn't know where to start! The only thing I really know about them is that XP has got something to with it, and you would need the enchantment table, I think?!? Is this right? I think I'll be putting enchantments on my "things I need to learn" list! If I remember correctly, I need diamonds and obsidian to make an enchantment table, which I can now do, as I have enough diamonds to make the pick axe to mine a large area of obsidian I found while mining earlier this week. Something to play around with tomorrow!

Just be careful when mining that obsidian....more than likely there is lava underneath it....

30 XP is your goal for max enchant potential. Note that enchanting uses up your XP (the same amount as the enchantment level). Another caveat is that the enchantments you get are random. I always save right before I try enchanting. If I don't get what I'm after, I exit without saving, reload, and try again.
Obsidian is easy to get. Build two wells, fill one with water and one with lava. and pour water on the lava. That's how I got my first four blocks. enchantments isn't hard and xp come quick when mining. Remember, 15 bookcases surrounding the enchantment table one space away. 1 space below, same level, or above. Put nothing in between. 30 xp with a iron pickaxe.... Fortune III
To mine obsidian without lava problems, mine underwater.
Find a lava pool. Pour water on it to get obsidian. Repeat as needed until the whole surface is obsidian. Put a dirt block in a convenient spot so you have somewhere to stand, and while the water is running over your obsidian, mine it. Even if there's lava underneath (as there usually is until you have it mostly mined out) the water will freeze it into more obsidian before the obsidian you just mined falls into the lava and gets destroyed. Repeat for the entire surface, including where your dirt block was. You now have a bunch of obsidian and a new obsidian surface to work with. Rinse (literally), repeat.
You're definitely gonna want to get a pickaxe with Fortune 3 on it. I think my single best find was a vein of 8 diamonds which, when picked with Fortune 3, produced 27 diamonds. Sometimes you run into multiple veins too. Pretty sure I once went into my branch mine for about 20 minutes and came back out with 50+ diamonds.
One thing I normally like to do before mining is make 4 or 5 iron pickaxes and give them all a level 1 enchant. You can get those 5 levels back in minutes and the Efficiency 1 and/or Unbreaking 1 enchants are helpful in fast and/or lengthy mining operations.
I'm currently experiencing a diamond drought though. There were 3 of us branch mining and we went for more than an hour without finding a single diamond. We eventually gave up. Maybe all of them are concentrated on the other side of the map or something haha.
I have been doing what my group of friends refers to as Plan L. Start on one corner of the map on level 12, and dig a straight line until you reach the other corner of the map. Today alone I found just over a stack of diamond (using an enchanted pick) and I only managed to make 1 corridor, and the start of another. This seems like the way to go to find diamond.
I usually just mine at bedrock and go down a line left and right every three or so blocks until I find some. Usually run into a lot of lava though.
Playing in creative mode at the moment. I dug a hole straight down to bedrock, starting mining in one direction, mined three blocks and found diamonds.
I'm up to 19 stacks of diamonds with branch mining bedrock to layer 14. I do use Fortune 3, and I save before mining a find. I demand at least double diamonds from my enchanted pickaxe. (I exit and reload if I get less.) I have not bothered to condense them into blocks. I like seeing them take up those 19 chest slots. Haha! ("I'm rich! I'm socially secure!")
I always save right before I try enchanting. If I don't get what I'm after, I exit without saving, reload, and try again.
So you play on the console? If not, how do you exit without saving?
Anyways, in vanilla, I've only just found my first diamonds and I've had the game since 1.3.2. Yea, sad. I mean, on the PC. I've had the console edition since it was released. And I've found a lot of diamonds. But I mean the PC I have the urge to always play with mods.

Are you serious? You can exit without saving by choosing "Exit without saving" from the menu. I have autosaves turned off. I like to choose when to save, always. I never let the game do it at unpredictable moments.
This is the Xbox 360 forum, so yes, of course I'm playing on the 360.

Well, I know how, but I didn't get to this topic from the console page, but rather from the active topics on the home page. So sorry.

One thing I don't have a shortage of is obsidian.
