If your just starting a slime farm do it on Y3, use that as your floor, torches/Glowstone in the ceiling. Then once you have a large pumpkin farm, build up. Mine 3 up, now your ceiling is 5 high, and epic lighting. An approach I failed to take on my last world.

I had a decent pumpkin farm already before I started with my slimes, so I used jack-o-lanterns.
I got the part about starting on Y3 right (just high enough for one layer of non-bedrock ... I used dirt, since I had a bunch in my inventory at the moment ... for slime spawning purposes). I now have the space above de-spawned (lit/slabbed/etc.) to slightly past Y40, and some of the surrounding areas dealt with as well; that is, of course, a slower and longer-term project. Also, this is one end of three consecutive slime chunks, so I will probably eventually be expanding into those. I'm still rather concerned about the skeleton I met walking around there; I'm afraid that I might have blocked spawning in that chunk a little too well.
I was looking at a diagram of how to build a truly epic slime farm: multiple spawn levels, a glass wall for viewing, I think it had water to wash the slimes to a killing zone ... truly impressive. Also a scary amount of work. Though on the plus side, with all the slimeballs I'm getting from my slimes now, plus the redstone I mined while clearing things, I can definitely build myself a nice water flush system if I want to put in an upper level or two. Hey, I'm lazy ... why go to the slimes when I can get the slimes to come to me?
I need to get back to work mining on the lower levels again so I can get more gold. The whole slime setup is quite a hike from my base, and I want to put in a minecart subway to get back and forth faster, which means booster rails, which means more than my measly one stack of gold. On the plus side, my clearing of some of the upper areas gave me a fair bit of iron, and I'll get more when I clear those levels completely instead of just the perimeter of the chunk, so that's taken care of, at least. The one thing I really wish the 360 version of the game had was hoppers; I'd love to be able to send minecarts down the rails to empty automatically! Ah, well, maybe TU102 or something.
Haha! Yeah, 31790 XP? I suspect foul play myself. If it's legit, I'd like to know how it's done.
after some testing, its not legit. Just not possible. 24 dispensers hooked into a clock, all full of bottle o enchanting. all ran until empty, just couldnt get me from 100 to 200.
