Fix your controller, because i don't find anything wrong with navigating boats, i mean i would like boats to get upgraded a bit, but nothing wrong with navigating them.
i shouldn't feel like Ive accomplished something great when i manage to park a boat in a 2x2 dock area.
A thousand times this ^
Making a boat do anything that requires maneuvering is ridiculously tedious. Plus the fact that you can instantly die for various reasons while boating.

The good people, they always die. And the bad people do too...But the weaker people, the people like me, WE have inherited the Earth. -Morgan Jones
Yeah, I agree wit the op. i once tried making a dock with lots of boats, but it was just too hard! if i even walked up to a boat, it would get pushed miles out to sea. plus-- or more of a minus, breaking a boat makes it drop the materials instead of the actual boat, so you'll have to craft it all over again.
and have you ever noticed the current is much better at steering boats than the players are. its like the game is taunting us.
On one hands, boats are confusing to stear, impossible to park, and often drift away or sink.
On the other hand, boats are fast and convienent.
Its kinda like the difference between making a gormet meal at home and going to McDonald's -- you feel better about making the meal at home and its more satisfying and user friendly. On the ther hand, McDonald's is just there

Steer with the camera, and do quick corrections and a bit of strafing with the left stick. It works like a charm for me. I always hop out of a boat before it reaches shore. Stopping it where you want to without breaking it and hurting yourself can be difficult, so I don't even try.
Its not my controller for sure, I know how to work them but they just are tedious and don't do what you really want. When im in a boat, i'll be going forward and when I turn it will start just swerve and act like it has a mind of its own. I try to keep to going the direction I was going to go when I turn but it just won't let me.

Dang boat has other ideas I guess...
This is user error. Dont blame the boat.
It sounds to me like you aren't compensating the change in perspective (right stick) to the movement of the boat (left stick). The mechanics of a boat have a relative direction according to which way the player is facing.
For example:
If you're facing the bow of the boat, then 'up' on the left stick is foward. If you turn to look left, the bow is to the right of the player, and therefore 'right' on the left stick is foward. Its really quite simple once you get used to it.
I keep hearing the Village People in my head when reading this thread. But yes practice will help. I have to relearn how to drive in Halo and Boardelands everytime i play. They don't drive like say forza vehicles. I say standardized controls for all games with vehicles.

which u can do without dieing quite easily. Thats how my water slide goes from 140 to bedrock in my world. Quite fun!
I've died when my wolf teleports to me and I'm in a boat. Also when going too fast and ramming objects sometimes.

On the same note, swamps with all those lily pads are very treacherous. Death by lily pad more than just a few times...
I don't take my wolves anywhere. I once killed my wolf by burning it to death with my sword. Completely on accident. It just got in the way.
Sometimes my wolves teleport to me even if I've told him to sit days ago.
