The only link is that diamonds and lava spawn on the same levels, so yes diamonds are near lava, but only because they spawn between layer 2 and 12

Diamonds are never found above level 16 though, and I have seen lava at level 64.
Yep. As was said already, diamonds and lava have nothing to do with each other. They are 2 different block types, each appearing in the world under its own independent rules.
Since you cannot open them by hand, I build contraptions to open iron doors. First I did buttons, but I find them to be very annoying. Then I tried pressure plates, but that only solved the issue of opening the door on the inside. Then I tried levers but only the outside one worked. I tried a pressure plate/lever combo, but it didnt work. Any suggestions?

I've almost given up on iron doors for this reason. I hit the button, walk forward, door slams in my face. Repeat. Repeat again. Knock door down, walk through, build door again Also curious to know about other ways to open them long enough for my slow self to get through them!

Why are buttons annoying? They do exactly what you want--open the door, wait a bit, close the door. And they work from both sides. You can add a lever on the inside too, if you want the option to keep the door open until you come back. Simple, no redstone contraptions to eat up a bunch of space.

It happened at first to me, but you just have to move fast through it. Every now and then it still happens, but I started getting the timing down. It has started become less annoying
