I have been playing minecraft for about a month now. I have found a lot including iron, diamond, Gold, Nether fortress and I have completed 19 out of 20 achievements. The last achievement I am missing is the saddle on a pig. I know saddles are found in dungeons along with cocoa beans and melon seeds, but I can not find a dungeon anywhere.
I know to listen for sounds of groups one type of monsters. I followed one sound to the point where I was fighting zombies and creepers mixed in but then the next day it was skeletons. When I switched to peaceful mode to take a look from where they were coming from I couldn't find anything. The area I am covering starts from level 13 all the way up to the surface along a canyon. I just don't understand why I always find a mix of monsters.
The canyon where you're mining sounds like a ravine. I don't know about other people, but I haven't found too many dungeons in the bottom of ravines. I agree with Baldur, you should try some other caves before giving up. Another common location for dungeons is in deserts. Look for a sunken area with some cobblestone exposed. There is usually also a single square block of sand sticking up above the others in the bottom of the pit where the spawner itself is located. Photo of one from the Wiki:
Also, as Xplosionz has pointed out, there are several seeds int he seeds list that provide coordinates for dungeons with saddles. Another way to get a pig to take fall damage without much in the way of supplies is to pen it in very small area and then dig a 3 x 3 x 5 deep pit next to the pen. Saddle the pig, open up the pen to the side the pit is on, get on and hit the pig. He will normally pretty much jump into the pit. At 5 blocks deep, he won't die (unless you hit him too many times) but he will take enough fall damage to have the achievement awarded.
Thanks Up Up. I didn't know about 1 block popping up possibly being one and I may sure may in the desert area. I did look through the desert for a 5 by 5 or 5 by 7 hole about 3 down but couldn't find one. I'm not interested in starting a new seed and will probably keep mining. I was under the impression a ravine was a good place to sure.
I found a dungeon last night while playing on peaceful and searching caves. But only one and I had nothing different in the chests. I found lots of Iron, Gold, and diamonds while searching though. The dungeon wasn't far underground either. It was in a huge cavern near the village
