Alright, recently the forums have been a bit BORING! I also just got back from my fishing trip, I caught a sea-bass bare handed after it broke my line (:.
Anyways, we've heard of these Mash-Up packs, these aren't part of an update, but a DLC, so, I figured it would be best to go here, but I'm not so sure considering the support for them comes in a future update (TU12). Well, WHATEVER!
Now down to business, what do we know about these "mash-up" packs?
Well, for starters, they make minecraft a whole different game, well, in looks. They add texture packs, skin packs, user interface, music, and even THEMED worlds. (Whatever the "heck" that means")
But what does this mean? I realize I'm rambling on and on about other stuff, but this is more of a theory and not a thread saying "OMG, BLOCKS FALLING GLITCH!?" What I think is, Mash-up packs will be very special, they can only be used per world, and cannot be spread out over different worlds, I'll explain in examples! Such fun!
They are activated at the creation of a world, let's say we all have the Mash-Up Pack 1, there will be a little box that allows us to use this pack here, what this does is, it will change everything, you can only use the skins in that mash-up pack on that world that has selected it, same with music, texture packs, etc, So if we use the Example A Skin on Example A World, we have to use Example Texture Pack A on that world, this way, nothing looks too dirty and gross. I would ramble on longer, and will likely update this thread when I can, but for now, I have to go, toodles! (:

Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.
Sounds to me like a Mash Up Pack will be like a complete reskinning of the entire game. For example, it sounds like they might release a Halo Mash Up Pack. So a Halo texture pack, a Halo Skin Pack, changing the UI to look like its from Halo, adding Halo-esque music, etc, etc.
Might not be right on, but that is basically what it sounds like to me based on 4J's description of it.
I feel like this is one of the few things they have now that will seperate us from the PC, which is good!
also i feel the need to mention they should make a skyrim mash-up pack.
i think thy're gonna be like resource packs for pc. basically completely change the visual aspects of the game. and of course the music. how much the user interface will change i dont know. that would be where the "mod" aspect would come in. by adding new craftable unique blocks and entities. like a mario coin block that pops out gold coins. or a grav lift for the halo theme. thats my guess anyway.
i think theme worlds will either be pre built adventure maps showcasing what 4j has done with the mash ups . or possibly world generators that generate structures and maps for the themes.
Themed world could be the way you want your world to look like example a Mario world that you make you could get the mash up pack to make it look more like a Mario world .
I heard it is really just sticker packs you put on your screen. You have to pull them off a replace them every time you move.
I also heard the Halo theme instead of music, will have a recording loop of homophobic squeakers that you cannot turn off, so you get authentic immersion.

I think you guys are being way too ambitious with this 'mash-up pack' thing.
Texture pack support is coming in TU12, not actual texture packs. TP's might come in TU13.
We already have skins.
They can't change the UI that much- it is controller-bound after all.
The music may be something like another game- but isn't the actual music used in another game copyrighted?
All I'm saying is "looking like another game" is all relative. Will it look like Halo or Skyrim? Of course not- it will be still be the ole blocky Minecraft... and act like it.

That may depend on who holds the copyrights to the music in the other games. For example, 4J might have been granted use from Microsoft for some of the games owned by them.

I don't recall anyone saying the game would act differently nor that it wouldn't be blocky anymore. It will look different (blocks included), not act different.
There are plenty of texture packs on the PC that make minecraft look like other games. For Example...
Borderlands...
That's just one example. There are Legend of Zelda, Fallout, Skyrim, Terraria, Star Wars, etc, etc texture packs. All do a perfect and excellent job of making Minecraft look like another game, regardless of the fact that it's still blocky.
As for music, Microsoft owns some of the largest gaming franchises in history so they could easily use that music. Then on top of that, they can create music inspired by another game that sounds similar. If it is similar sounding and not the exact same song, copyright won't have any effect on it.
Had a thought in another thread concerning the themed worlds. I haven't seen any info on how these work but i have two speculative ideas:
1. They are map-saves: someone created structures and paths and other things for a map in some sort of editor like creative (or something very similar), saved it, and the save file is transferred with the pack and a copy is opened in the players name.
2. They are something like the tutorial world: where a seed generates and then structures are generated on top of it as you play.
I think both ideas have some interesting implications.
Just saw a tweet today from @4jstudios, and it looks like they are going to be using a save file of some sort
Can you post this tweet? Oh screw I'll just look it up on their twitter.
Alright, that just means that a themed world is a normal world but different, and it cannot be altered (the theme cannot be) after the save is created.
It looks like I was right, the first texture pack IS going to be a mash-up pack! Three cheers for Kitties!
Sadly, it looks like they went from 99 bugs to 117. so expect the update to not come for a while

"A Mash-up Pack makes Minecraft look like another game, so Texture Pack + Skin Pack + User Interface + Music + Themed World" https://twitter.com/4JStudios/status/360361438247788547

I hope they don't cost too much.
I think Texture Packs/Mash-up Packs are cool, but what I really want is a real map sharing system.
i think theme worlds will either be pre built adventure maps showcasing what 4j has done with the mash ups . or possibly world generators that generate structures and maps for the themes.
agreed. im not sure why they dont do this. i mean bungie paved the way. and we have the cloud now as well.
We can already share maps you just dont know how to
How Aboot Now Eh?
I also heard the Halo theme instead of music, will have a recording loop of homophobic squeakers that you cannot turn off, so you get authentic immersion.
thats what texture packs do.
