Personally I think that the bow is better than the sword in pvp but when it comes to enchantments the sword beats the bow no problem
What I like of the sword is the looting enchantment (there is no similar enchantment for the bow) but the bow has a infinity enchantment which is pretty useful sometimes.
To use the bow you need more skill than the sword and lets take into consideration that the bow has limited ammunitions unless you have the infinity enchantment
I prefer using a bow, but that's only my humble opinion. It has just always been my first choice in any game (when possible) to be an archer/ranger. As for which one is actually better, there is no factual answer. The sword will be most practical in some situations, the bow in others. If the question at hand inquired which was more useful, I would say the sword comes in handy more often than a bow.
If you want to improve your skills with the bow, dye enough sheep to make a 10 X 10 target, then mark off intervals of 10 blocks away. Once you can nail it at about 40 blocks, you're ready to equip it as a primary weapon, I pick off creepers with a level 30 enchanted bow from a great distance away.. Practice makes perfect.
Useful to find a skeleton spawner and make an xp grinder out of it for bones and arrows. A looting sword goes a long way here.
Hope this is helpful to anyone out there.
Fully charged Bows do 41/2 hearts of damage while the iron sword does 3 and diamond does 31/2
in this case bows do more damage and is ranged but have slower attacks and require ammunition
Swords how ever are close ranged attack alot quicker and at 3 1/2 hearts for a diamond sword is more efficient because no ammo is required and can deal 6 hearts of damage in 2 Seconds depending on how fast your trigger finger is
So i would carry a sword for my main attack and bow as a secondary
It varies. When I can get infinity on a bow, then I'll use it and it'll break within like thirty minutes 'cause I just shoot everything. I always enchant a sword before a bow though. So I guess I'm a sword fan.

Even better make a small twisting mine cart track that is a closed system so the minecart keeps moving once in motion. Using varying powerrails will make it slow down and speed up and use lots of turns. This provides a moving target for archery practice. If you hit the minecart directly it will pop of the track so you can pick it up. If you hit the track in front of the cart it stops the cart and any arrows that miss you can just go retrieve.
Well, I make sure I have always a sword, bow and arrows. Arrows are not hard to get flint is easy to come buy and chicken farms provide the feathers. If I got the time and I am at a distance I won't hesitate to fire. Creepers I keep separated so I need to get a bow. However, blazes, zombies, and skeletons are just easier will my sword. The easiest kill I had on a ghast was also with my sword and it was surprising I had that opportunity.

Retired StaffHowever in SSP I tend to favour swords primarily for the Looting enchantment.
Stay fluffy~

...the BETTER part of valor!!
a good tip: enchanting any bow at level 1 will give you power I 100% of the time.

End of discussion.
a couple of pieces of iron and some redstone added to a bow would make a nice crossbow.
Yeah, a crossbow would be like the old bow (no charge time + fast fire)
Back to topic, it seems that the bow is winning only for a couple of votes
Pros- long range, good damage, good for killing creepers
Cons- takes longer to do full damage, need sword to get all needed ingredients
Sword:
Pros- can be crafted as soon as world is started, good damage (diamond/iron)
Cons- bad vs creepers
...You need them both to be successful in my opinion
