Once I was in a rivine and all of my swords had broke ( I always carry a couple spare tools and weapons for everything except the hoe) and I had forgotten to put away my axe the last time I was top side. So out of desparation of self defence... I equiped it. To my surprise it does just as much damage as my swords.
So that leads me to wonder why cant the axes be enchanted with some damage bonus stuff and do you with my affinity for the heft of an axe that I should convert for the sake of being an axeman?
They are the second best choice in the sense of Mob Combat.. so you were well equipped for battle.. But! they count as 2 hits for their durability if you strike a mob as opposed to 1 hit when you break any block.. FYI

Well, even with the lack of enchants, Unbreaking III is a good one for a Combat axe. But I see how they might use the durability factor of mob vs block to somewhat discourage axe weilders. Besides that I probally would just switch to axes for the challange of it.^_^
Also axes cost 3 diamonds or iron or stone or wood + 2 sticks
Swords cost 2 diamonds or iron or stone or wood + 1 stick
Overall swords are better because they cause the same damage, can be enchanted with damage enchants, cost less resources and have a higher durability (due to axes wasting 2 uses instead of 1)

Noted... though unless you making it specifically for combat. a diamond axe is by far a waste of diamonds, same with a diamond ( or even an iron) hoe. Again I stress that an axe with unbreaking of any level is an effective combate weapon even if it cannot take any ofther damage effect as the sword does. Take into consideration that an Axe of any resource with Unbreaking III. since the sword cannot take unbreaking ( from what I can tell) they take up other enchants to make up for it.. especially with combinations like Smite II, Sharpness II, and Fire Aspect I ( which by far is an ungodly combination of effects for three swords separately, let alone one blade.) In the end I think it would be personal pereference.
Axes deal 0.5 hearts less than their sword counterpart.
Factoring out defense and criticals, a Diamond Sword with Sharpness IV will deal somewhere between 8,591~14,839 hearts...or 5.5~9.5 hearts per hit over 1,562 hits.
A Diamond Axe, however, will deal 3 hearts with each hit. Assuming Unbreaking III is tacked on to it before usage, and assuming the enchantment effectively gives you 4x durability than that of a standard Diamond Axe, you will be dealing 9,372 hearts of damage, which is 3 hearts each hit over what we'll average as 3,124 hits (mind you it takes "2 hits" per hit).
Overall, you might get lucky enough to have a Diamond Axe trump a Sword in damage; however, Looting, Knockback, and Fire Aspect would easily defeat the axe. That and you're still using an additional Diamond for a slightly higher minimum damage.
TL;DR--Axes are good as a secondary weapon, but swords are still better.

For reference, a diamond shovel does as much damage as a wooden sword, and only costs one diamond to craft. It also mines wood at a similar rate as either a stone or iron axe (somewhere between .75 and .50 seconds - never broken out a stopwatch)

If you were looking to add a dimension to the difficulty, I'd say an axe is certainly an interesting approach. More materials to craft initially, and lower damage / less effective enchantments.
I would say that the axe has less durabillity than the sword, and the sword does more damage. (Plus, it costs more diamonds.) However, everyone knows that the axe (Preferably budder.) is the choice weapon of the Baccas!

axes for chopping trees
swords for killing things.
Primarily because using the wrong tool wears that tool out faster.

So Baccas prefer weapons made of marijuana?

There is the bow. Legaloss style!
But you're right, they should add more weapons. At least they should add a spear or lance which is more friendly to mounted players.
First thing I thought of was Link shooting stuff from Epona.

Retired StaffI don't think "budder" has ever been a slang term for cannabis. Bud, yes. Budder, no.
It's not slang; it's an actual thing similar to that.
