Does your real world preference transfer to minecraft when it comes to pets? I have had lots of animals but prefer cats over dogs. In my experience they are more consistent across the board but that may be because several of the dogs I have had were rescued animals that already had issues.
I pick cats because:
1- cats scare away creepers
2- "cats" is my favorite minecraft music disk
3- cats are the new mob in minecraft
4- it takes more skill to get a cat than to tame a dog
5- tamed cats have more variety in skin patterns
6- cats meow
note: cats will be coming in the next update; so yes I am talking about xbox.
I hate creepers, so I would go along with having a cat as my pet of choice. Other mobs I'm able to take out pretty easily, without worrying about the landscape. Besides, IRL they are my pet of choice too.
I would have both, as I love most critters... would be nice to have a pet bird in the game...lol that would be my favorite, especially if it is an amazon parrot or similar...
But in the game I would tame when I feel like it. I would most likely have cats first just because of creeper repellant...

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
I have both IRL, but I will tame ocelots as long as their quite. My cat can barely squeak. If not i will keep my squids. Now if they had reptiles that were true to life, Id be all over that. Good, quiet pets them reptiles. Not like Geese. Or chickens , or.........
I prefer cats IRL, I've never had a dog before but I've had plenty of kitties. In the game, however, I'd probably have both. A cat to keep with me just while I'm around my house or my farm to keep me safe from creepers, and a dog to take with me if I go adventuring!
Probably both because of what you pointed out, is cats scare away creepers which will be helpful on my build sights and base. So I might have a bunch of those, and I get dogs just to have them I normally have two in every house, base, or other builds.
I tame wolves for dogs mostly because they tend to kill off the sheep otherwise and I hate seeing a bunch of frustrated wolves incessantly jumping at my double-wide animal pen fences whenever I leave my home base. I do find when fighting mobs, they tend to get in the way quite a bit and I really hate trying to keep tabs on them when I'm mining; but they can be somewhat useful if being attacked by more than one mob at a time.
Of course, we'll have to wait to see how well the cats are at scaring away creepers (after this next update on the Xbox); but if they're really good at it, I'm contemplating placing them around my key builds and mine sites much like living gargoyles.
Based on how creepers react to cats in utube videos of PC I'm gonna bet that cats are going to be seen as overpowered. Two dogs and two cats with armor and basic weapons is going to make you unkillable. Just this morning I was scouting on a hill and got surrounded by 3 creepers and had to make a run for it. That wouldn't have been an issue with some kitty friends.

I agree. But I do like wolves for hunting, when you have two or three, you can go out and kill for food easily, without having to mindlessly punch at the air until you get lucky enough to hit something, because those cows and chickens move FAST.
Dogs i tame to help me hunt and also protect me when adventuring out. Cats of course i will keep around my house. They may only follow me near my house and all just to keep creepers away. But when i go out for adventure they stay.

Hmm, if that is the case then limits on pets could be in order? That, I mean for people with servers built around a setting for the survival experience. Like, you're limited to only one of each pet???
That is usually what I would do, only have just a dog and/or cat in certain situations. Though I still rather have a cat to follow me around.

EDIT: However, "Far" is my favourite music disk.
