So I recently started playing on a survival island of sorts.
I've been setting up camp for a couple of hours, getting my strip mine in check, growing a farm, planting saplings, etc. But I started to wonder if there could be more to this world than Mooshroom cows, and if spawning myself wolves would be possible.
The guy on the youtube channel says that if you expand the initial spawn island (or the one other island with grass, that he fails to mention), that peaceful mobs will spawn... I'm wondering if there's any hope for me to spawn wolves? The wiki states that they spawn in taiga and forest biomes; of which my map has neither: is it hopeless?
Personally, I've not been successful on the Xbox in getting even passive mobs to spawn by just expanding the existing grass islands scattered throughout the ocean biome. On one seed, The Godfather, I noticed a landless swamp biome where I was able to eventually get chickens, cows, sheep and pigs to spawn my making a landmass larger than 16 x 16 in area and using an enchanting silk touch pickaxe to transplant some grass from elsewhere on the map and then, after it spread, using bonemeal to make a section of tall grass. The chickens began spawning before the landmass reached 16 x 16, but the regular cows did not start to spawn until after I had expanded it to about 18 x 18 and added the tall grass. No wolves at all yet I'm afraid.
I believe wolves only spawn in forest/tundra biomes. I'm not entirely sure though. If that's true, then the only way you'll get a wolf is through creative mode.

No passive mobs besides squid spawn in the Ocean biome. You will not encounter any wolves, unless you happen to have a small snippet of non-ocean, non-mushroom land tucked away in the corner of your map.
I play Survival Island a little different than you. I will spawn an item in from creative mode as long as it doesn't feel like I'm straigh up cheating. It i want a spruce tree sapling then ya know what? I'm giving my self one, because it doesn't matter.
If you want wolfs then spawn an egg in. It's not something that will break the game, it's more "cosmetic" than anything else.

Yeah, I think I'll just do that, it appears that getting one legit will be impossible :C.
I mean, the reason I like survival islands is because I find islands easiest to establish and protect, not for the direct challenge of it all, so this doesn't really bother me.
Search your entire ocean, if you find a section where the water is frozen then that area is flagged as taiga. You can then do as UpUp suggested and transplant some grass over there and eventually wolves should spawn. If you don't find any ice, then you might have to go with the creative option.

Yeah the first thing I did was scour the entire ocean, corner to corner to look at all of the islands up close, and choose which one to settle whilst filling in my map... no ice. Creative it is, I suppose. Gets a little lonely on my island, a puppy would help haha.
