We're looking at getting Minecraft as a birthday present for one of our two boys and I had a couple quick questions about it before we made the leap:
1. It seems that even without XBL Gold, we can play multiplayer locally (splitscreen). Is that correct?
2. Our Xbox currently has one XBL Gold account, which we share when we want to go online to play games so I assume that content for whomever is deemed the main player here would be saved with that account. For local games/play, though, can the named guest accounts save content locally too? I'm trying to see if both boys can create/play/save games and keep their progress separate (realizing that the one that isn't tied to the XBL Gold account can't take that online).
It's kinda embarrassing that I've fallen so out of touch with games (stupid work)...
2. There is a bit more to it than just it being registered to a live account.
2a. It registers to live account, like you say.
2b. It registers to the xbox you downloaded it first to.
What that means is that the xbox you bought and downloaded it onto will allow anyone to play the game as long as it is on that specific xbox. You don't have to be gold in order buy and play minecraft... Gold is usually for those games that need the online part of it, which means playing not split-screen but actual online multiplayer through the connect. Split-screen is local and that works with silver & gold accounts far as I know.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
1. Yes. If the console is not the licensed console for the game, however, the gamertag that has the gold account and that purchased the game has to be playing. If the console is the original one on which the game was purchased or if you have done a License Transfer, then offline, local profiles will be able to play Minecraft singling or in local splitscreen even if the gold account is not signed in. The Gold account can also have up to 3 Guests play online with him, although these are temporary accounts so even their inventory will not be saved when these guests exit the world.
2. The leaderboards are only for Gold accounts, so such statistics will only be kept for the gold account gamertag. However, local profiles can create and save their own worlds. If they do, however, these worlds will not be accessible online in any way. Even if the Gold account player signs joins these worlds, they cannot be turned into an online game. If they are playing local splitscreen, the inventories of the local named profiles will be saved when they exit an offline (local splitscreen) game or if they are playing in their own worlds offline.
Just to clarify, leaderboards work with silver accounts just fine. Both mine and my wife's accounts have been silver since we downloaded Minecraft. Local splitscreen works just fine though you need an HD tv and the appropriate cables, either an HDMI or the component video cables set to HD (we use the component cables and they work just fine)
We've loaded and saved worlds on both accounts without issue as well as played in each other's worlds also without issue. Items in your inventory when you leave a world will still be there when you rejoin that world, they do not cross over worlds or accounts (if player 2 joins player 1's world and exits with items in their inventory those items will be there when they come back to that world but not in another world that player 1 has or any world made by player 2.)
Basically, your boys will be able to play just fine with their own worlds and play in each others without issue.
