I am about to be seriously boned here. I started a "Survival Island" game that has one island of green grass and all the rest (3 can be seen from spawn) are Shroom biome. My problem is that not a single passive mob other than squid is spawning. There aren't any wolves (I already looked into that), and my island is at least 2 chunks in size. Help!!!
small islands like that in oceans are (i think) still considered ocean biomes for spawning reasons. If the mushroom biomes are large enough you could maybe get some mooshrooms over there and turn them into cows.
There are a lot of islands around, so it isn't really an ocean biome. I did some exploration and I found another grass island (about a chunk in size) about 100 blocks away from me diagonally that STILL had no passive mobs on it. Also, the mushroom islands are quite large, so there's no reason for mooshrooms not to spawn :\
Farm animals refuse to spawn in Ocean Biomes, the likes of which is your world.
If you haven't yet, check the entire map for anything not-oceany.
If not, your only hope for finding animals is to keep expanding the grass out and wait for a miracle....
The small islands in classic survival island seeds do not, as a rule, spawn animals. They are part of the ocean biome per the Wiki: "Small islands with infrequent vegetation can be found in oceans. Friendly mobs do not spawn on these islands, but hostiles do."
"The Godfather" (seed without the quotes) is a classic survival island seed on the Xbox that contains a few small grass islands, 1 island with a single tree (very near spawn but not actually the spawn island), and a few mushroom islands on the total map. However, since this is the Xbox and the world is essentially cut off at the edges, there is a small section near the very corner of part of the map that is not actually ocean biome. It is swamp (evident by lily pads floating in the water). There is no natural land above water in this area so this area does not naturally spawn animals either. However, I have discovered that if you make a dirt island larger that 1 chunk square (16 blocks square) and silk touch some grass onto it in that area of that map, it will then start spawning all the varieties of animals. (Chickens and pigs may start spawning even when the land mass is smaller than 1 chunk) I have posted a thread about it in the seeds section.
So, before you give up on the idea on your own map, you should probably sail around and check the edges of your map for evidence of other imcomplete biomes existing... e.g. lily pads on the water (indicating a swamp biome) or ice patches (indicating a tundra or taiga biome)
will do! Thank you everybody! UPDATE: as I sailed the seemingly endless abyss of blue, I slowly came to the realization that I was truly BONED. Since I was doing a faux hardcore mode, and I don't want to say I just quit it, let's just say he died of famine due to mining without sleep for a good MC half-month straight.

Stay fluffy~
